Anthropic CEO Discusses India’s Pivotal Role in Responsible AI Development with PM Modi

TLDR: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the company’s expansion in India and the nation’s crucial role in fostering a human-centric and responsible AI future. Anthropic plans to open its first Indian office in Bengaluru in early 2026, aiming to apply AI across key sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture.

New Delhi, October 11, 2025 – Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of leading AI safety and research firm Anthropic, held a significant meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. The discussions centered on Anthropic’s strategic expansion within India and the nation’s burgeoning influence in shaping a responsible and human-centric future for artificial intelligence.

This high-profile meeting follows Anthropic’s recent announcement of its plans to establish its first Indian office in Bengaluru by early 2026. This new hub is intended to bolster India’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem and address the escalating demand for Anthropic’s flagship large language model, Claude AI. The company aims to recruit local talent and collaborate with Indian businesses, non-profits, and startups to integrate AI solutions across vital sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) following the meeting, Amodei stated, “Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India — where Claude Code use is up 5× since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI.” He further emphasized India’s rapid AI adoption and technical depth, positioning it as central to the global trajectory of the technology. Amodei described India as one of Anthropic’s fastest-expanding markets globally.

Prime Minister Modi, in response, welcomed Anthropic’s expansion, tweeting, “Glad to meet you. India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors.” The Prime Minister highlighted India’s commitment to balancing innovation with responsibility, ensuring that technology serves all its people.

According to Anthropic’s latest Economic Index Report, India currently ranks as the second-largest market globally for Claude AI usage, trailing only the United States. Furthermore, the usage of Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant, has seen a fivefold increase in India since June, underscoring the country’s growing developer base leveraging AI for technical and software tasks, including user-interface design, code debugging, and software development.

The meeting capped a week-long visit for Amodei, which included Anthropic’s inaugural India Developers Day in Bengaluru, co-hosted with venture-capital firm Accel. During this event, senior executives noted that over half of Claude’s usage in India is for technical applications. Anthropic’s Head of EMEA, Guillaume Princen, clarified at the event, “We’re not entering a new market but deepening a relationship in a market we’re already in.” The company’s expansion strategy aligns with its mission to develop responsible AI systems that deliver significant social and economic benefits.
