New Delhi, October 11, 2025 – In a pivotal move to navigate the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, NITI Aayog today unveiled its ‘Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy’. This landmark report, released by CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, sets an ambitious vision for India to become a trusted global AI workforce and innovation partner by 2035.
The roadmap acknowledges the dual impact of AI on the Indian job market. While it highlights the potential for significant job displacements, with up to 1.5 to 2 million jobs in the $245 billion technology and customer experience (CX) sectors at risk by 2031, it simultaneously identifies a monumental opportunity. With timely and coordinated intervention, India could create up to 4 million new AI-driven jobs within the next five years.
Addressing the urgency of this transformation, B.V.R. Subrahmanyam stated, “India’s strength lies in its people. With over nine million professionals in technology and customer experience sectors, and the world’s largest pool of young digital talent, we have both the scale and ambition. What we need now is urgency, vision, and coordination.” He emphasized that the roadmap is designed not just to mitigate risks but to convert them into a massive opportunity for AI-led job creation and digital empowerment.
The ‘Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy’ was meticulously developed by NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub, in collaboration with industry giants NASSCOM and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The initiative also benefited from the guidance of an Expert Council comprising leaders from prominent companies such as IBM, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree, and Teleperformance.
At the core of this strategic blueprint is the proposed National AI Talent Mission, a flagship initiative built upon three foundational pillars:
1. AI Literacy and Education Reform: This pillar advocates for embedding AI as a foundational skill across all levels of education, from schools to universities and vocational training programs. The goal is to prepare future generations with essential AI literacy, making it as fundamental as mathematics or computer science.
2. National Reskilling Engine: A large-scale upskilling and reskilling program is envisioned to equip millions of existing technology and CX professionals for higher-value, AI-augmented roles. This aims to transition the current workforce into positions that complement AI capabilities rather than being replaced by them.
3. Global AI Talent Magnet: India seeks to position itself as a premier global hub for AI skilling. This involves strategies to retain top domestic AI talent, attract international experts, and foster an environment conducive to AI research, development, and entrepreneurship.
Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog, underscored the critical nature of the present moment: “The difference between job loss and job creation depends squarely on the choices we make today. This roadmap provides a clear, actionable path to ensure India becomes the global epicentre of AI talent by 2035.”
