Tata Communications and AWS Forge Partnership to Build Advanced AI-Optimized Network in India

TLDR: Tata Communications and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are collaborating to establish a high-capacity, AI-optimized network across India. This strategic partnership aims to connect three key AWS infrastructure locations – Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai – with a national long-haul network, significantly boosting generative AI adoption and cloud innovation in the country. This deployment marks one of Tata Communications’ largest network projects in India to date, designed to support data-intensive workloads like generative AI, 5G, and high-performance computing.

Tata Communications, a prominent global communications technology provider, has announced a significant collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop an advanced, AI-ready network infrastructure across India. This strategic initiative is poised to accelerate the adoption of generative AI and foster cloud innovation throughout the nation. The partnership will see the establishment of a high-capacity, resilient long-distance network that interconnects three crucial AWS infrastructure locations: Mumbai and Hyderabad, where AWS has data center regions, and Chennai, which hosts AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network infrastructure.

This extensive network deployment represents one of Tata Communications’ largest undertakings in India, distinguished by its considerable size, scale, and bandwidth. The primary objective is to create a robust infrastructure backbone capable of supporting demanding AI and machine learning (ML) workloads across India. The network is specifically engineered to deliver ultra-low latency and high-bandwidth connections, which are essential for the efficient processing and transfer of data-intensive applications such as generative AI, 5G, and high-performance computing (HPC).

Genius Wong, Executive Vice President, Core and Next-Gen Connectivity Services and Chief Technology Officer at Tata Communications, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “AI is transforming entire industries around the world, and our collaboration with AWS puts us at the forefront of this revolution in India. Together, we are creating a network that not only meets today’s requirements but also anticipates the needs of tomorrow. By building a customized network solution, we are ushering in the age of AI in India and reinforcing our position as the long-term partner of choice for global technology leaders.”

Jesse Dougherty, Vice President for Network Edge Services at Amazon Web Services, echoed this sentiment, remarking, “We are excited to work with Tata Communications to establish an advanced in-country network in India. The infrastructure is designed to support the most data-intensive workloads, like 5G, generative AI, and high-performance computing. This collaboration with Tata Communications will further enable our customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and generative AI, and drive growth in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.”
