Amazon Commits $13 Billion to Boost Australia’s Data Center and AI Infrastructure

TLDR: Amazon is set to invest AU$20 billion (approximately US$13 billion) over the next five years, from 2025 to 2029, to significantly expand its data center infrastructure in Australia. This substantial investment aims to meet the surging demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) services, bolstering Australia’s digital capabilities and fostering economic growth.

Amazon has announced a monumental investment of AU$20 billion (approximately US$13 billion) in Australia’s data center infrastructure, spanning from 2025 to 2029. This commitment marks the largest global technology investment by Amazon in Australia to date, signaling a strategic move to enhance the nation’s digital backbone and support the burgeoning demand for advanced computing services.

The primary objective of this investment is to expand, operate, and maintain Amazon’s data center facilities across the country. A key driver behind this significant outlay is the escalating demand for cloud computing and, more specifically, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI workloads. The new infrastructure will be designed to bolster Australia’s AI capabilities and accelerate the adoption of AI across various sectors.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded the investment, stating, “This investment will generate economic opportunity for Australians, including skilled jobs and infrastructure that can support complex AI and supercomputing applications.” He further emphasized that this is “the largest investment our country has seen from a global technology provider, and is an exciting opportunity for Australia to build AI capability using secure, resilient infrastructure.” The Department of Industry, Science and Resources projects that AI and automation could contribute up to AU$391 billion (US$396 billion) annually to Australia’s GDP by 2030, underscoring the potential economic impact of such investments.

Matt Garman, Chief Executive Officer of Amazon Web Services (AWS), highlighted the transformative nature of AI, calling it a “once-in-a-generation transformation.” He affirmed that the investment deepens AWS’s long-term commitment to empowering Australian organizations to innovate at scale and harness the “enormous opportunity that generative AI offers.”

In addition to expanding its data center capacity, Amazon is also committed to sustainable operations. The company plans to develop three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, which will generate over 170 megawatts of renewable energy to power the expanding cloud infrastructure. Upon completion, Amazon will operate 11 solar farms across Australia, collectively capable of producing 1.4 million megawatt-hours annually, sufficient to power approximately 290,000 Australian homes.

This investment builds upon Amazon’s existing presence in Australia, which began in 2012 with the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region. The initiative also follows the recent launch of AWS AI Spring Australia, a comprehensive program designed to accelerate AI adoption and capability nationwide.
