TLDR: South Australia has launched the nation’s first government Office for Artificial Intelligence, backed by a $28 million commitment in the 2025-26 State Budget. This initiative aims to integrate AI ethically and effectively across public sectors like healthcare, policing, and social services to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
South Australia has taken a pioneering step in public sector innovation with the establishment of the nation’s first government Office for Artificial Intelligence (AI). This landmark initiative, announced on July 28, 2025, is supported by a substantial $28 million commitment from the 2025-26 State Budget, underscoring the state’s dedication to leveraging emerging technologies for public benefit.
The new Office for AI is designed to spearhead innovative projects that harness the immense potential of artificial intelligence across critical government sectors, including healthcare, policing, social services, and public administration. Its primary goal is to build a more productive public sector by reducing government costs, streamlining services, and enabling frontline staff to focus on core responsibilities.
A key function of the Office will be to support ‘Proof of Value’ initiatives – pilot projects demonstrating how AI can deliver tangible benefits. The Office will comprise five full-time equivalent staff, with recruitment already underway for a dedicated team, starting with the appointment of a Director for Artificial Intelligence. This team will be responsible for crafting policy, developing strategies, and establishing ethical guardrails to ensure that AI advancements are implemented responsibly and effectively for all South Australians.
Michael Brown, a proponent of this initiative, emphasized the practical impact expected from AI integration. He stated, “We want every advance in AI to translate into tangible benefits for our state. Imagine healthcare workers spending more time at the bedside and police officers less time on paperwork. That’s the practical impact this program aims to deliver.” He further added, “We are now recruiting for a dedicated team to deliver technology that is responsible, ethical and genuinely impactful.”
Agencies within the South Australian government seeking to integrate AI solutions into their operations will be able to apply for funding and support through the Office’s application process. This move solidifies South Australia’s position as a leader in emerging technology, setting a national standard for the impactful and ethical use of artificial intelligence in the public sector.

This is not South Australia’s first foray into AI leadership. The state previously established Australia’s first institute focused on artificial intelligence at the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site in 2017, demonstrating a consistent commitment to innovation in this field.
