TLDR: Google is set to invest over Rs 52,000 crore ($6 billion) in Andhra Pradesh, India, to develop a 1-gigawatt data center, which will be Asia’s largest in terms of capacity and capital outlay. This significant investment, part of Alphabet’s global data center expansion, includes $2 billion for renewable energy and aims to meet the escalating demands of generative AI and cloud computing in the region.
Google, the technology giant led by Sundar Pichai, is reportedly poised to make a monumental investment exceeding Rs 52,000 crore (approximately $6 billion) in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This substantial capital injection is earmarked for the development of a 1-gigawatt data center, a project anticipated to become Asia’s largest in terms of both capacity and financial commitment. The facility is planned for the coastal city of Visakhapatnam and marks Google’s inaugural data center investment of this scale in India.
A significant portion of this investment, specifically $2 billion, will be dedicated to establishing renewable energy capacity to power the massive data center. This commitment aligns with Alphabet’s broader global strategy, which includes a $75 billion pledge announced earlier this year for data center expansion worldwide.
This move by Google is a key development in India’s accelerating digital infrastructure race. The country is witnessing a surge in computational demands, largely driven by the rapid advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. Global tech behemoths are increasingly channeling investments into India to capitalize on this growth. For instance, Microsoft recently committed $3.7 billion to its cloud and AI infrastructure in India, while Amazon has pledged $13 billion by 2030. Other major players, including investment firm Blackstone, OpenAI, NTT Data, and Reliance Group, are also reportedly exploring large-scale data center projects across the nation.

Andhra Pradesh, having intensified its efforts to attract private capital, particularly in the technology and energy sectors, is a strategic location for this investment. Nara Lokesh, the IT Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has indicated that the state has already secured commitments for 1.6 GW of data center capacity and aims to expand this to 6 GW over the next five years. He further noted that the state is preparing for a substantial increase in energy demand, estimating that 10 GW of power, primarily from renewable sources, will be necessary to support future data center operations.
