Perplexity’s AI-Powered ‘Comet’ Browser Launches Early Access on Android, CEO Claims Potential to Redefine Mobile OS Landscape

TLDR: Perplexity has begun rolling out early access invites for its AI-powered browser, “Comet,” to Android users. This marks the first mobile expansion for the agentic AI browser, which aims to transform web browsing with conversational AI capabilities. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has made a bold assertion that Comet has the potential to make the Android operating system obsolete.

Perplexity, the innovative AI search engine startup, has officially commenced the rollout of early access invitations for its “Comet” AI browser to Android users. This strategic move introduces the company’s advanced agentic search browsing experience to the mobile platform, following its initial availability on Windows and Mac operating systems. The announcement, made on November 10, 2025, has generated significant buzz, particularly due to Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas’s audacious claim that Comet possesses the capability to render Android obsolete.

“Comet” is described by Perplexity as a “browser for agentic search,” designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks with minimal user intervention. Unlike traditional browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Comet offers a unique generative AI experience, allowing users to directly ask questions about the webpage they are viewing. This conversational interface extends to a wide array of functionalities, including working across multiple tabs, assisting with job hunting, finding optimal travel deals, summarizing content, booking meetings, sending emails, and automating intricate workflows like comparing products or filling out forms. Internal tests reportedly show Comet performing “23% better than its predecessor.”

The initial Android rollout is on an invite-only basis, with Perplexity prioritizing its paid “Pro/Max” customers and regular users of its AI-powered search engine for early access. Srinivas emphasized this criterion in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Comet Android early invites are going out. If you want to maximize your chances for early access and shaping how the future of mobile browsing looks like—it all comes down to your Perplexity Android usage and Pro/Max user status! More invites will go out soon.” The company plans to make the browser available on iOS in the near future as well.

This launch intensifies the burgeoning “AI browser wars,” a rapidly evolving segment of the tech industry. Perplexity’s Comet enters a competitive landscape where OpenAI recently launched “ChatGPT Atlas,” a browser integrating directly with its popular AI chatbot. Concurrently, tech giants like Microsoft and Google are actively enhancing their respective browsers, Edge and Chrome, with more sophisticated AI features. Despite Chrome’s commanding lead in the browser market share (60.45% globally, according to SimilarWeb data), Perplexity is actively challenging this dominance. Notably, earlier this year, Perplexity reportedly attempted to acquire Google Chrome for $34.5 billion, underscoring its ambition in the browser space. Most modern browsers, including Comet, Edge, and ChatGPT Atlas, are built on Chromium, Google’s open-source web browser project.
