Perplexity has announced a major upgrade to its Comet Assistant, evolving it into a sophisticated agentic AI designed to operate with human-like efficiency and enhanced capabilities across the web. The redesigned Comet Assistant empowers users with a more robust tool for tackling intricate, multi-step tasks that span multiple browser tabs.
This significant update allows the AI assistant to interact with web environments in a more intelligent and seamless manner, reducing friction in various online workflows. Key functionalities now include automated data entry, comprehensive research, efficient travel booking, and streamlined job hunting. According to internal testing conducted by Perplexity, the new Comet Assistant demonstrates a 23% improvement in successfully completing multi-step tasks without premature termination.
The upgrade also introduces refined permission controls, giving users greater autonomy over the extent of direct browser interaction the assistant can perform. Initially, the Comet AI browser, which integrates the assistant, was rolled out to subscribers of Perplexity’s Max plan, priced at $200 per month. However, Perplexity later made the Comet browser, including its sidecar assistant, accessible to all users at no cost. Premium subscribers still benefit from additional features such as an email assistant, early access to new functionalities, and a “background assistant” capable of managing multiple tasks concurrently via a dedicated dashboard. The Comet browser and its AI agent are available for macOS and Windows users, positioning Perplexity as a key player in the evolving landscape of AI-first web browsing experiences, similar to OpenAI’s Operator AI agent.
