Zebra Technologies Forges Generative AI Alliance with Google to Revolutionize Frontline Operations

TLDR: Zebra Technologies has partnered with Google Cloud, Android, and Qualcomm to integrate generative AI into its solutions, aiming to enhance frontline employee productivity and customer experiences. This collaboration focuses on developing AI-powered tools, including a chat-based system for handheld devices, to provide just-in-time information and automate tasks, addressing persistent labor challenges and evolving operational demands.

Zebra Technologies has announced a significant partnership with Google Cloud, Android, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., focused on leveraging generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to transform frontline operations across various industries. This strategic alliance aims to boost employee productivity, streamline workflows, and ultimately deliver superior customer experiences.

The core of this collaboration involves developing innovative GenAI capabilities designed to reduce the cognitive load on frontline employees. By providing just-in-time decision-making support, faster onboarding, and enhanced training, Zebra and its partners seek to empower workers in roles such as back-office staff and store associates. This initiative is particularly pertinent given ongoing labor availability and cost challenges, which necessitate a more multi-skilled workforce and higher quality customer engagement.

A key outcome of this partnership is the introduction of a chat-based experience accessible from handheld devices. This tool allows frontline employees to quickly access critical information by interacting conversationally with a knowledge agent. This agent is powered by generative AI, which has been been trained on domain-specific knowledge derived from extensive internal documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), company policies, employee training materials, and product knowledge. This ensures workers receive accurate and contextually relevant information precisely when needed.

Zebra Technologies Chief Technology Officer, Tom Bianculli, emphasized the strategic shift this partnership represents. “We want to shift conversations around generative AI from ‘how’ it works to ‘what’ it can do to create new ways of working that make everyday life better for organizations, their employees and those they serve,” Bianculli stated. He further added, “Generative AI will accelerate that with finely tuned, real-world models that can schedule and automate tasks, respond to requests, and give recommendations based on the context of a situation in a worker’s moment of need.”

The initial capabilities stemming from this collaboration were previewed at Google Cloud Next ’24 in Las Vegas. Rouzbeh Aminpour, Global Retail Solution Engineering Manager at Google Cloud, highlighted the transformative potential, noting, “Generative AI is fundamentally changing how many organizations operate and will fuel a new era of how both customers and employees will interact with businesses and brands.” He added that by utilizing Google Cloud’s leading GenAI capabilities, Zebra can help companies empower employees with better tools and new capabilities, enhancing productivity.

Further expanding its AI offerings, Zebra also debuted its Mobile Computing AI Suite in January 2025. This suite includes an AI data capture software development kit (SDK) and example applications tailored for select Zebra Android mobile devices. These capabilities are designed to capture workflow context and integrate directly with Zebra Companion, a new suite of AI agents slated for release in the second quarter of 2025, specifically targeting retail frontline workers. Yogesh Kulkarni, Zebra’s Vice President for AI Strategy, reiterated the company’s long-standing commitment to AI, stating, “For years, we’ve been embedding AI into our products, elevating outcomes for our customers and partners.” He added, “Our AI-enabled solutions are shaping the future of frontline operations by creating new ways of working.”

The partnership also extends to co-innovation projects with major retailers, such as Target. Through this collaboration, Zebra, Google Cloud, and Qualcomm are working with Target to optimize inventory management, improve shelf readiness, and enhance the overall shopping experience. Target views GenAI as a critical enabler for its growth roadmap and a key accelerant of its strategy, aiming to make team members more efficient and automate non-meaningful tasks, allowing them to focus on guest experience. Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. Vice President of Business Development, Art Miller, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to work with Zebra to enable them to deliver transformative customer experiences and enhanced employee productivity through generative AI using our advanced on-device AI capabilities.”
