India’s Digital Transformation: Agentic AI Propels a New Era of Collaborative Workplaces

TLDR: India is rapidly embracing agentic AI, with a significant majority of organizations planning to integrate these advanced AI systems within the next year. This shift is fostering a new era of digital co-working, enhancing productivity, decision-making, and creating new job roles, while reshaping existing ones across various sectors.

India is on the cusp of a profound digital transformation, largely driven by the widespread adoption and integration of agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. This shift is ushering in an era of “digital co-working,” where AI agents collaborate proactively with human counterparts, fundamentally reshaping business operations and the future of work across the nation.

A recent IDC InfoBrief, commissioned by UiPath, a leader in agentic automation, reveals the rapid pace of this adoption. Approximately 40% of Indian organizations have already implemented agentic AI, with nearly 50% more planning to deploy the technology within the next 12 months. This indicates a significant move from experimental AI use to large-scale, strategic implementation across enterprises.

India’s AI technology spending is projected for robust growth, with an annualized rate of 38% from 2023, expected to reach US$10.4 billion by 2028. In 2025, investments are primarily focused on building the foundational infrastructure necessary to power transformative, high-value AI use cases. This surge is fueled by India’s tech-savvy workforce, expanding digital infrastructure, and supportive government initiatives.

The benefits of agentic AI are already evident. A substantial 80% of Indian companies report that agentic AI boosts productivity, while 73% note an improvement in decision-making. Agentic AI is gaining strong traction across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, retail & wholesale, healthcare, and life sciences, industries characterized by heavy data reliance and repetitive decision cycles. Specifically, 69% of Indian organizations are leveraging agentic AI to enhance productivity, 59% for personalized customer engagement, and 57% for risk and fraud detection, demonstrating its application across both front and back-office functions.

Agentic AI is redefining team dynamics, moving beyond being a passive tool to becoming an active participant that can plan, decide, and execute tasks autonomously based on goals and context. These systems are taking over routine tasks such as infrastructure optimization, customer service triage, and compliance checks, thereby freeing human teams to concentrate on strategic and creative priorities. India is rapidly emerging as a hub for AI-agent innovation, supported by a maturing digital ecosystem and strong executive buy-in. According to Cloudera’s 2025 survey, 84% of Indian organizations have deployed AI agents in the past two years, with 36% doing so just in the last year, and 98% planning to expand their use in the coming year. Furthermore, 78% are targeting significant organization-wide deployment, and 94% recognize that investing in AI agents is crucial for maintaining competitiveness.

While the transformation is significant, it also brings changes to the workforce. The ServiceNow AI Skills Research 2025, conducted with Pearson, projects that over 10.35 million jobs in India will be reshaped by agentic AI by 2030, while simultaneously creating 3 million new tech roles. Key sectors facing the most disruption include manufacturing (8 million jobs), retail (7.6 million), and education (2.5 million). As repetitive tasks are increasingly automated, a new wave of AI-supported roles is emerging. Sumeet Mathur, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at ServiceNow India Technology and Business Centre, stated, “India’s AI journey is at a defining moment, with agentic AI not only transforming existing roles but also creating over 3 million new tech jobs by the end of the decade.”

To navigate this evolving landscape, the study emphasizes the need to shift from passive AI adoption to active, trust-based usage. This involves training employees to critically evaluate AI systems, understand underlying algorithms, and contribute to responsible AI deployment. India’s demographic advantage, with its large youth population, and its expanding digital infrastructure provide a solid foundation for this transformation, positioning the country not just to adapt to the AI era but to lead it.

Major technology companies like Zoom, Adobe, Microsoft, Cisco, and Atlassian are also making significant pivots towards agentic AI. Ram Menon, CEO and co-founder of Indian tech company Avaamo, describes this evolution as “AI workers with human level intelligence,” emphasizing their proactiveness driven by autonomous capabilities to “perceive, reason, act and learn” towards prescribed outcomes. Anjul Bhambhri, senior vice president of engineering at Adobe Experience Cloud, noted, “Agentic AI is a major leap that will accelerate workplace transformation.”
