TLDR: Small businesses across Southern Arizona are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance productivity, streamline operations, and drive growth, reflecting a national trend of AI integration in the small business sector.
Small businesses in Southern Arizona are at the forefront of a technological transformation, actively integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations to unlock new potentials for efficiency and expansion. This embrace of AI mirrors a broader national trend, with data indicating significant adoption rates among small and medium-sized enterprises.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, nearly 80% of small business owners nationally are either currently utilizing AI or planning to adopt it within the year. This trend is clearly reflected in communities like Tucson, where entrepreneurs are showing considerable curiosity and investment in AI-powered tools. In 2023, one-third of small business owners invested in AI, with a projected 53% planning increased investments in 2024, highlighting a rapid acceleration in AI integration.
AI is being leveraged in various capacities, from customer service chatbots and advanced analytics software to more sophisticated applications designed to automate processes and accelerate growth. Local businesses are exploring how AI can improve efficiency, gain market advantage, boost productivity, and enhance the overall customer experience. Mark Greatrex, president of Cox Communications, emphasized this shift, stating, “The data clearly shows that small and medium-sized businesses are embracing AI. Leveraging AI to boost productivity and enhance the customer experience empowers entrepreneurs to take their business to the next level and prosper.”
Beyond efficiency, AI is also seen as a tool to strengthen and grow teams, rather than replace human workers. A survey by Cox Business revealed that 52% of small business owners believe AI helps them increase or retain employees, a sentiment echoed by 65% of their employees, indicating strong support for this technology as an enabler of human potential.
While the enthusiasm for AI is high, small businesses also prioritize foundational technological needs. Consistent connectivity for point-of-sale systems, cloud applications, and virtual meetings remains critical, with many seeking cellular backups for internet failover. Cybersecurity is another paramount concern, as businesses recognize that proactive protection against breaches is far more cost-effective than post-incident response. Strengthening network infrastructure, robust data backups, and cyber-awareness training programs are high on their wish lists.

To support this burgeoning interest, local initiatives are providing resources and training. For instance, an ‘AI for Small Business Workshop’ presented by Brain Bridge Labs in partnership with PCC’s Southern Arizona Technology & Entrepreneurship Center (SATEC) is scheduled for August 20, 2025. This hands-on workshop aims to provide practical, actionable AI strategies, covering topics from AI fundamentals and evolving business models to hands-on use of tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude for market research and customer intelligence. Such programs are crucial in equipping local entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools to effectively harness AI’s potential.
