Global AI Patent Race Intensifies: US and China Vie for Dominance with Tech Giants and Academia at the Forefront

The global race for artificial intelligence supremacy is reaching new heights, with the United States and China emerging as the primary contenders. This intensifying competition is particularly evident in the realm of AI patent applications, a critical indicator of innovation and future technological leadership.

Recent data highlights China’s significant lead in the sheer volume of AI patent filings. In 2024 alone, China’s AI patent applications are estimated to have surpassed 188,000, with projections nearing 300,000 across all categories. Between 2014 and 2023, China reportedly filed over 38,000 generative AI patents, outnumbering the United States by more than sixfold and accounting for over 70% of global AI patent filings. This aggressive strategy is largely attributed to robust state-backed initiatives prioritizing AI research and development.

Conversely, the United States, while ranking as the second-largest AI patent hub, focuses on the quality and impact of its innovations. In 2024, the U.S. saw 51,487 new generative AI patent applications, marking a 56% year-over-year increase. Major American technology companies such as Google DeepMind, IBM, OpenAI, and Microsoft are at the forefront of U.S. filings, often emphasizing high-impact and frequently cited research. These U.S. patents tend to be more frequently cited internationally, suggesting a deeper influence on foundational AI models and infrastructure. However, China is rapidly narrowing this quality gap through improved research standards and increased collaboration between academia and industry.

Beyond patents, the competition extends to computing power and investment. The U.S. currently controls approximately 75% of the world’s AI supercomputing resources, compared to China’s 15%. Despite China’s plans to boost domestic computing capacity by 50% by 2025, it faces challenges due to restrictions on high-end chips. In terms of investment, the U.S. private sector’s AI investment reached an estimated $109.1 billion in 2024, significantly dwarfing China’s investment. Investment in generative AI alone in the U.S. exceeded $25.4 billion, surpassing the combined total of China, Europe, and the UK.

Experts note that while China benefits from vast user data and strong state support for AI applications in smart cities and governance, its progress is somewhat constrained by U.S. export controls on chips and a reliance on overseas training for top AI talent.
