Google Integrates Advanced AI Mode into Chrome for Mobile Devices

TLDR: Google has rolled out a new ‘AI Mode’ button to its Chrome browser on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. This feature, powered by the Gemini 2.5 large language model, offers an enhanced, conversational, and multimodal search experience, allowing users to ask complex questions, receive detailed answers, and even perform agentic tasks like booking reservations. The rollout began in the U.S. and is set to expand globally.

Google is significantly enhancing its mobile browsing experience by introducing a dedicated ‘AI Mode’ button to the Chrome browser for iPhone, iPad, and Android users. This new feature, which mirrors functionality previously exclusive to desktop Chrome, marks a strategic move by Google to deeply embed artificial intelligence into its core products and provide a more intuitive and powerful search experience on the go.

The ‘AI Mode’ button is prominently located on the ‘New Tab’ page, often appearing next to the Incognito mode icon or just below the search bar, offering users quick and visible access to Google’s advanced AI assistant. Tapping this button activates a smarter search experience powered by Gemini 2.5, Google’s latest multimodal large language model. This allows for more natural and interactive searches, moving beyond traditional keyword queries.

Users can now engage with the search engine in a conversational manner, posing complex, multi-part questions through text, voice, or even images. Gemini 2.5 is designed to understand context, interpret user intent, and provide rich, context-aware answers that go far beyond simple lists of links. This includes offering detailed explanations, summarizing intricate information, and suggesting relevant follow-up questions, effectively transforming the search bar into a dialogue with an intelligent assistant.

A notable advancement highlighted in the rollout is the addition of ‘agentic capabilities’ to AI Mode. This means the AI can now perform actions on behalf of the user, such as booking restaurant tables, purchasing event tickets, or reserving flights, streamlining various online tasks directly within the browser.

The initial rollout of AI Mode commenced in the United States, with Google confirming ambitious plans for a gradual expansion to over 160 countries. The company also intends to support multiple languages, including Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese, underscoring its commitment to making AI-assisted browsing a global standard for billions of users.

Google emphasizes that AI Mode is entirely optional, serving as a complement to the traditional search experience rather than a replacement. Users maintain control, needing to manually tap the button to engage with the AI, aligning with Google’s philosophy of ‘helpful AI’ that empowers user choice. This integration is poised to change how everyday web interactions take place, making online searches more fluid, efficient, and personalized.
