College Possible Integrates AI to Bolster Student and Coach Support Amid Funding Shifts

TLDR: College Possible, a national non-profit, has adopted an AI-powered virtual coaching service to enhance support for its students and coaches. This strategic shift, partly in response to federal funding cuts, leverages a generative AI tool developed in partnership with Salesforce, providing 24/7 personalized guidance and enabling professional coaches to focus on deeper student relationships. The initiative is supported by a $1 million grant from Salesforce and aims to expand reach and impact, serving nearly 25,000 students annually across eight locations.

College Possible, a prominent non-profit dedicated to making college possible for low-income students, is revolutionizing its support model through the integration of an advanced AI tool. This strategic pivot comes as the organization adapts to significant changes in funding, including the termination of $400 million in federal AmeriCorps grants, which directly impacted College Possible Wisconsin’s operations on April 30, 2025.

The new coaching model pairs full-time professional staff with a sophisticated student-facing AI platform, offering round-the-clock support. Developed in collaboration with Salesforce, this generative AI tool draws upon nearly 25 years of College Possible’s extensive knowledge base to deliver immediate and personalized guidance to students. This ensures continuous access to essential curriculum and resources, empowering students to navigate the complexities of college applications, financial aid, enrollment, and persistence towards degree completion.

Executive Director Marco Morrison expressed optimism regarding the long-term benefits of this innovative program. ‘With full-time, professional coaches in place, many of whom are former AmeriCorps members or have supervised them in the past, students will benefit from deeper, long-term relationships and the expertise of professionals, who bring both field experience and enduring insight into college access and career readiness,’ Morrison stated. This allows human advisors to concentrate on building more meaningful connections with students, while the AI handles routine inquiries and provides consistent support.

The transition to this AI-enhanced model is a proactive measure to ensure the long-term sustainability and greater impact of College Possible’s mission, reducing reliance on volatile funding streams. The organization’s commitment to its 15-year legacy in Wisconsin remains steadfast, aiming to preserve and strengthen its proven impact.

This significant funding will facilitate the expansion of student programs, career readiness initiatives, and the deployment of AI tools across eight of College Possible’s locations. This expansion is projected to impact nearly 25,000 students annually. In the 2023-2024 academic year alone, College Possible provided free coaching to over 25,000 students, underscoring the scale of its operations and the potential reach of this new AI-powered approach.
