BlackRock-Led Consortium, Including MGX, Microsoft, and Nvidia, Acquires Aligned Data Centers in $40 Billion Deal to Fuel AI Infrastructure Expansion

TLDR: A powerful consortium spearheaded by BlackRock, and featuring key players like MGX, Microsoft, and Nvidia, has announced the acquisition of Aligned Data Centers for approximately $40 billion. This monumental transaction, one of the largest in the data center sector, represents the inaugural major investment by the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP). The strategic move is designed to significantly bolster the infrastructure required to meet the escalating global demand for AI computing capabilities.

In a landmark move poised to reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence infrastructure, a consortium led by BlackRock, through its newly formed Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), has agreed to acquire Aligned Data Centers from Macquarie Asset Management for an estimated $40 billion. This deal, announced on October 15, 2025, is one of the largest data center acquisitions in history and is anticipated to finalize in the first half of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.

The Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), established in 2024, brings together formidable entities including BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Mubadala Investment’s MGX, Microsoft, Nvidia, Elon Musk’s xAI, Singapore’s Temasek, and the Kuwait Investment Authority. The partnership’s overarching goal is to mobilize up to $100 billion in capital, comprising $30 billion in equity and an additional $70 billion in debt, to accelerate the expansion of data center and energy infrastructure crucial for supporting the burgeoning growth of AI.

Aligned Data Centers, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is a rapidly expanding hyperscale data center operator across the Americas. The company specializes in providing essential infrastructure for cloud and AI companies, currently operating or developing approximately 50 campuses with a total operational and planned capacity exceeding 5 gigawatts across North and South America. Macquarie Asset Management initially invested in Aligned in 2018, expanding its stake in 2020, and under its ownership, the company grew from just two sites to a robust continental platform. Earlier this year, Aligned successfully raised $12 billion in equity and debt to further expand its data center capacity and land portfolio.

Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock and Chairman of AIP, underscored the strategic importance of this investment, stating, “This partnership is bringing together leading companies and mobilizing private capital to accelerate AI innovation and drive global economic growth and productivity. With this investment in Aligned Data Centers, we further our goal of delivering the infrastructure necessary to power the future of AI, while offering our clients attractive opportunities to participate in its growth.” Ahmed Yahia Al Idrissi, MGX chief executive, echoed this sentiment, reportedly remarking that “These data centers are effectively the infrastructure of the 21st century.”

The acquisition reflects a significant and growing investor appetite for digital infrastructure, driven by the unprecedented AI boom. Industry estimates suggest that total global demand for data centers is approximately 20 gigawatts annually, with half of that demand originating from the U.S. market. Morgan Stanley projects that leading technology companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and CoreWeave, are expected to collectively spend around $400 billion on AI infrastructure this year alone. The consortium’s plan includes more than doubling Aligned’s existing 50 campuses, a critical step in addressing global shortages of land, power, and raw materials essential for supporting the intensive AI workloads of major tech firms like OpenAI, Google, and Meta Platforms.
