Meta Commits $1.5 Billion to New AI-Focused Data Center in El Paso, Texas

TLDR: Meta Platforms is investing over $1.5 billion to construct a new, gigawatt-scale AI data center in El Paso, Texas. This facility, Meta’s 29th globally and third in Texas, is designed to bolster the company’s artificial intelligence capabilities, support advanced AI models, and contribute to its goal of achieving superintelligence. The project is expected to create 100 operational jobs and up to 1,800 construction jobs at its peak, with a commitment to 100% renewable energy and water restoration efforts.

El Paso, Texas – Meta Platforms has announced a significant investment exceeding $1.5 billion for the development of a state-of-the-art, AI-focused data center in El Paso, Texas. This strategic move underscores Meta’s escalating ambitions in artificial intelligence, aiming to enhance its infrastructure to support increasingly complex AI workloads and advance its pursuit of superintelligence.

The new facility, Meta’s 29th data center worldwide and its third in Texas, is designed to be a gigawatt-scale site, capable of accommodating both current server technologies and future generations of AI-enabled hardware. The company anticipates the initial phase of the project to be completed by 2028. With this latest investment, Meta’s total commitment to data centers in Texas now surpasses $10 billion, employing over 2,500 full-time staff across its various operations in the state.

The economic impact on El Paso is expected to be substantial. The data center project will generate approximately 100 permanent operational jobs upon completion, and an estimated 1,800 construction jobs at the peak of its initial phase. Meta cited El Paso’s robust infrastructure and skilled workforce as key factors in its decision to locate the facility there. Jon Barela, CEO of the Borderplex Alliance, a local economic and policy advocacy group instrumental in facilitating the project, remarked, “The fastest gazelle will find their place and others will follow. Meta, to my mind, is the fastest in the industry.” He added, “We have had other groups look at the area, other data centres, and we anticipate that others will follow.”

Environmental stewardship is a core component of Meta’s plan for the El Paso data center. The facility will be powered by 100% clean and renewable energy, aligning with Meta’s broader sustainability goals. Furthermore, the company has committed to restoring 200% of the water consumed by the data center to local watersheds, working towards its 2030 objective of being ‘water positive.’ The buildings are also designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, reflecting high standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, and responsible supply chain practices. Meta will also support the local community through its Community Accelerator program, which aims to build digital skills and leverage AI tools for small businesses in the El Paso area.
