AWS Commits $12.7 Billion to Propel India’s Cloud and AI Leadership

TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) is investing $12.7 billion in India by 2030 to significantly expand its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This massive investment aims to position India as a global leader in AI innovation, fostering the development of advanced AI capabilities and creating substantial economic opportunities.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a substantial investment of $12.7 billion in India by 2030, a strategic move designed to bolster the nation’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and establish it as a pivotal force in the global AI landscape. This commitment brings AWS’s total investment in India to $16.4 billion by 2030, including the $3.7 billion already invested between 2016 and 2022.

The investment will primarily focus on building high-performance computing infrastructure, advanced data centers, and platforms crucial for the development and deployment of large-scale AI and machine learning models. Key regions targeted for this expansion include Mumbai and Hyderabad, which are set to become major hubs for AI-accelerated computing capacity and network infrastructure.

Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS Vice President for Agentic AI and a former White House AI competitiveness advisor, emphasized the significance of this period for AI, stating, “We are in an unprecedented time when it comes to AI, in terms of what it is able to do.” He further highlighted India’s unique position, noting, “Indian builders are incredibly passionate, curious, and excited to embrace new technologies,” and described the Indian developer community as “one of the most vibrant communities.”

This substantial investment is expected to yield significant economic benefits for India. Projections indicate it will support approximately 131,700 full-time equivalent jobs annually in Indian businesses and contribute an estimated $23.3 billion to India’s overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. Specifically, Maharashtra alone is anticipated to receive $8.3 billion for expanded data centers and AI computing hubs, which could add $15.3 billion to India’s GDP and create over 81,000 jobs annually in the region by 2030. Experts also project that AI could add nearly $1 trillion to India’s economy by 2035, contributing around 10 percent towards the country’s goal of reaching a $5 trillion GDP.

Beyond infrastructure, AWS is also heavily investing in talent development. The company has already trained over 5.9 million individuals in India in cloud and AI skills, with plans to train an additional 2.7 million in the coming year. This aligns with India’s rapidly expanding AI workforce, which is already the world’s fastest-growing, poised to surpass a million job openings by next year. The investment aims to empower Indian developers to become architects of new AI solutions, rather than just users.

The move comes amidst increasing global competition in AI, particularly between the United States and China. AWS’s commitment is seen as a strategic bet on India to emerge as the third major force in the global AI race, providing the computing backbone for future advanced AI systems. The investment will support enterprise and public sector AI adoption through platforms like Amazon Q Business, Bedrock, and SageMaker, and is expected to spark the rollout of AWS Marketplace India by late 2025.
