Amazon’s Second Quarter Profits Soar 35% Driven by AI Investments

TLDR: Amazon reported a 35% surge in quarterly profits for Q2 2025, reaching $18.2 billion, with AI investments cited as a primary growth driver. Net sales climbed 13% to $167.7 billion, exceeding analyst expectations. Despite strong performance, investor concerns over significant AI-related capital outlays led to a slight dip in share price.

Amazon has announced a substantial 35% increase in its quarterly profits, reaching US$18.2 billion for the second quarter ending June 30, 2025, up from US$13.5 billion in the same period last year. This significant surge is largely attributed to the company’s strategic and substantial investments in artificial intelligence. Net sales also saw a robust increase of 13%, climbing to US$167.7 billion, surpassing analyst forecasts and indicating the company’s resilience amidst global economic factors.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) division, the company’s leading cloud computing arm, was a key contributor to this growth, with sales jumping 17.5% to US$30.9 billion. AWS’s operating profit rose to US$10.2 billion from US$9.3 billion a year earlier. This strong performance in AWS reflects the escalating demand for cloud infrastructure necessary to power advanced AI applications, a trend that has significantly benefited major cloud providers as companies worldwide accelerate their adoption of generative AI technologies.

Despite these stellar results, investor sentiment was tempered by concerns over Amazon’s considerable cash outlays for its AI ambitions. The company has pledged to spend up to US$100 billion this year, predominantly on AI-related investments for AWS. This substantial capital expenditure led to a decline in the company’s free cash flow, which sharply decreased to US$18.2 billion for the trailing 12 months, down from US$53 billion in the prior year. Amazon’s spending on property and equipment nearly doubled in the quarter, reaching US$32.2 billion compared to US$17.6 billion a year earlier, reflecting massive investments in data centers and backroom capabilities. Consequently, Amazon’s share price experienced a more than three percent dip in after-hours trading, as investors weighed the immediate costs against future AI-driven returns. For the current quarter, Amazon forecasts net sales between US$174.0 billion and US$179.5 billion, representing a solid growth of 10-13% compared to the third quarter of 2024, with operating profit expected to range from US$15.5 billion to US$20.5 billion.
