TLDR: Meta and Microsoft shares surged after reporting strong earnings, driven by significant investments in artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s market capitalization surpassed $4 trillion, while Meta saw substantial revenue growth. Both companies are increasing capital expenditures to further their AI ambitions, benefiting chipmakers like AMD and Broadcom.
A wave of investor optimism swept through Wall Street on July 31, 2025, as shares of Meta Platforms and Microsoft soared following robust earnings reports and deepening commitments to artificial intelligence. Meta’s stock jumped 12%, while Microsoft gained 5%, with both companies easily surpassing analysts’ forecasts and outlining major capital expenditure plans to fuel their growing AI ambitions.
Microsoft’s rally pushed its market capitalization past an unprecedented $4 trillion for the first time, placing it alongside Nvidia in the exclusive trillion-dollar club, as reported by CNBC. The software giant announced an 18% year-over-year revenue increase in its fiscal fourth quarter, reaching $76.44 billion. Its net income climbed to $27.23 billion, or $3.65 per share, up from $22.04 billion a year earlier. Barclays analysts remained upbeat about Microsoft’s prospects, citing continued strength in data center demand and the company’s strong positioning in generative AI.
Meta delivered a similarly strong performance, reporting $47.52 billion in second-quarter revenue, a 22% increase from the previous year. Net income surged 36% to $18.34 billion, or $7.14 per share. JPMorgan’s Doug Anmuth noted that Meta’s exceptional revenue growth continues to support its substantial infrastructure investments, with sales increases largely attributed to AI-driven engagement improvements and advertising enhancements. Anmuth stated, “Meta continues to earn the right to spend more on capex with strong core advertising performance.”
What is particularly noteworthy is the scale of investment in AI infrastructure. Meta raised the lower end of its 2025 capital expenditures range, now expecting to spend between $66 billion and $72 billion, an increase from its previous estimate that started at $64 billion. Microsoft, for its part, projected over $30 billion in fiscal Q1 capital expenditures and finance leases, significantly exceeding market expectations of around $24.2 billion. This spending spree has wide-reaching implications for the tech industry.

Analysts at Citi highlighted that chipmakers such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Broadcom are poised to benefit significantly from these increased investments. Microsoft accounts for approximately 8% of AMD’s revenue, while Meta contributes 2% to Broadcom’s revenue. At Meta, the AI drive extends beyond just servers and chips. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has ramped up hiring and recently announced a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, a data-labeling startup, alongside the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs. Morgan Stanley acknowledged the substantial impact of these strategic moves. Dan Ives at Wedbush described this moment as a “watershed” for Microsoft, with AI already transforming the growth trajectory of the firm’s cloud business, reflecting “eye-popping cloud and AI strength.”
