Alphabet and Amazon Report Billions in Gains from Anthropic AI Investments

TLDR: Alphabet and Amazon have reported substantial financial gains, totaling billions of dollars, stemming from their strategic investments in Anthropic AI. These ‘paper gains’ significantly boosted their recent quarterly profits, underscoring the growing financial impact of artificial intelligence on major tech companies.

In a significant development highlighting the burgeoning influence of artificial intelligence on corporate balance sheets, tech giants Alphabet and Amazon have announced billions in financial gains attributed to their investments in Anthropic PBC, a prominent generative AI startup. These ‘paper gains’ have notably bolstered their third-quarter profits, signaling a new phase in how major tech companies’ AI bets are materializing.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported a monumental $10.7 billion in net gains on equity securities. Sources familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the details, confirmed that a significant portion of this gain is directly linked to its investment in Anthropic. Alphabet’s total investment in Anthropic stands at approximately $3 billion, with $2 billion invested in 2023 and an additional $1 billion earlier this year. Further solidifying its commitment, Google Cloud recently secured a major deal to provide Anthropic with 1 million specialized AI chips starting in 2026. This agreement, valued at tens of billions of dollars, is expected to deliver over a gigawatt of computing power, drastically expanding Anthropic’s capacity for AI model training and development.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s third-quarter profit surged by an impressive 38%, a boost significantly aided by a $9.5 billion pretax gain tied to the rising valuation of its Anthropic investment. This increase was recorded in Amazon’s nonoperating income for the period, as detailed in its recent earnings release. Amazon has been equally aggressive in its support, investing $8 billion into the startup. The company has also developed a vast network of data centers and custom AI chips through ‘Project Rainier,’ an infrastructure initiative designed to support advanced AI workloads. This system is now fully operational, enabling Anthropic to scale its next-generation large language models.

These substantial, albeit currently unrealized, gains underscore a broader trend of tech companies leveraging AI investments to amplify their financial statements and enhance investor confidence. Anthropic, known for its Claude chatbot family, has emerged as a key competitor to OpenAI, attracting significant capital from established players like Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously emphasized the startup’s race to secure the necessary computing power to meet demand for its generative AI chatbot, Claude. Amodei anticipates that Anthropic will utilize over 1 million chips to power its AI technology by 2026, with smarter models and web integration expected in the coming months. He also teased the development of a two-way voice mode and improved memory for Claude, envisioning the technology surpassing human intelligence within the next two to three years.

In contrast to these successes, not all tech giants have seen similar positive outcomes. Microsoft Corp. recently reported a $3.1 billion decrease in its most recent quarterly net income, reflecting losses tied to its substantial $13.75 billion investment in OpenAI, in which it holds a 27% ownership stake. This divergence highlights the varying financial impacts of strategic AI partnerships across the industry.
