Microsoft Unveils Autonomous GitHub Copilot Agent for Code Generation and Bug Resolution

TLDR: Microsoft has launched an AI-powered GitHub Copilot agent at its Build 2025 conference. This agent can autonomously write, debug, and update code, including fixing bugs, adding features, and improving documentation. Powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, it acts as a “digital coworker” or “peer programmer,” generating draft pull requests that still require human approval for integration. The tool aims to reduce repetitive tasks for developers, allowing them to focus on higher-level creative work. It’s currently in preview and available through Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise plans.

Microsoft announced a significant advancement in AI-driven software development at its annual Build 2025 conference in Seattle: a new GitHub AI agent. This agent, part of the GitHub Copilot suite, is designed to autonomously write, debug, and update code. Unlike previous coding assistants that primarily offered suggestions, this new agent takes on complete programming tasks. Its capabilities include fixing bugs, adding new features, refactoring code, improving documentation, and running tests. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke described it as handling “routine programming work.”

The agent functions as a “peer programmer” or “digital coworker,” initiating work upon task assignment and creating draft pull requests. However, a crucial aspect emphasized by Microsoft is the requirement for human approval before any automated changes are integrated into Continuous Integration (CI) or Continuous Delivery (CD) workflows. This ensures security, oversight, and maintains developer control. The AI agent is powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, which enables it to understand coding tasks, follow context, and produce accurate outputs.

Microsoft anticipates that this tool will revolutionize how developers work, reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks and freeing them for more creative problem-solving and higher-level work. Alex Devkar, senior vice president of engineering and analytics at Carvana, stated that “The GitHub Copilot coding agent fits into our existing workflow and converts specifications to production code in minutes. This increases our velocity and enables our team to channel their energy toward higher-level creative work.”

The GitHub Copilot agent is currently in preview mode, with Microsoft actively seeking feedback from developers before a broader release. It is particularly suited for low to medium complexity work within stable, well-tested codebases. The agent is available through Copilot Pro+ subscriptions for individual developers and Copilot Enterprise plans for organizations. Microsoft expects AI agents to become central to how people work, estimating that businesses will deploy around 1.3 billion agents by 2028.

This launch is part of Microsoft’s broader vision for an “open agentic web,” where AI agents can perform tasks and make decisions for individuals or teams. It also positions Microsoft strategically against competitors offering code generation tools like Cursor and Windsurf, by focusing on ongoing support and maintenance of existing codebases.
