TLDR: Demetri Mitchell, a 28-year-old former Manchester United youth player, successfully negotiated his free transfer to League One side Leyton Orient using ChatGPT as his ‘AI agent,’ reportedly securing a more financially beneficial two-year deal by avoiding traditional agent fees.
In a groundbreaking move that highlights the evolving role of artificial intelligence in professional industries, former Manchester United youth prospect Demetri Mitchell, aged 28, has revealed he utilized ChatGPT to negotiate his recent transfer to League One club Leyton Orient. Mitchell, who began his career at Old Trafford before spells with Hearts, Blackpool, Hibernian, and Exeter City, joined Orient on a free transfer this summer, navigating the complex process without a traditional football agent.
Speaking on the ‘From My Left’ podcast, Mitchell explained his unconventional approach: ‘They [Leyton Orient] sent me an offer, and I started using ChatGPT, asking it how to negotiate a deal, and what to say in it.’ He further elaborated on the personal factors he considered, stating, ‘This is what I was on last season, moving to London, cost of living, missus is gonna move down with me, my little one.’
This innovative strategy allowed Mitchell to bypass the typical 5% agent fees, which can amount to a significant sum over the course of a contract. By subscribing to ChatGPT’s premium service for approximately £15 a month, he reportedly secured a two-year deal that was ‘more financially rewarding than expected,’ effectively putting more money directly into his pocket. Mitchell confidently stated that the AI software has been his ‘best agent to date.’
The footballer also offered a candid perspective on the financial realities of a professional football career, emphasizing the importance of careful money management. ‘When that contract is finished and you’ve got the expenses of four grand a month, you’re in a bit of a pickle. You have to be careful with your money and your spending,’ he warned. ‘It’s not as lucrative and glamorous as it seems. You’ve got to think about life after football. It’s not a career you’re going to be in at 65 – it’s a career that you’re in for the next two years guaranteed if you’re on a two-year contract.’
