Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI Pioneer AI-Driven ‘Agentic Payments’ in India

TLDR: In a groundbreaking collaboration, Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have launched ‘Agentic Payments’ on ChatGPT in India. This pilot initiative aims to transform AI assistants into comprehensive shopping agents, enabling users to discover and purchase products through conversational AI, leveraging UPI innovations like UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay for seamless, secure transactions. BigBasket is among the first merchants to adopt this new AI-native payment method.

Mumbai, India – October 9, 2025 – A significant leap in digital commerce is underway in India as payments giant Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and artificial intelligence leader OpenAI have officially announced their collaboration to pilot ‘Agentic Payments’ on ChatGPT. This initiative is set to redefine online shopping by transforming AI assistants into full-fledged shopping agents, facilitating AI-driven commerce on a national scale.

The ‘Agentic Payments’ system allows users to complete transactions directly within the AI environment, eliminating the need to switch between apps. This intelligent, conversational, and seamless digital payment experience is currently in its pilot phase. Users can interact with ChatGPT to discover products, compare prices, plan purchases, and then, with a single confirmation, complete the transaction.

At the core of this innovation is India’s robust Unified Payments Interface (UPI) infrastructure, which processes over 20 billion transactions monthly. The Agentic Payments feature is built on UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay. UPI Circle allows users to authorize another individual (or in this case, an AI agent) to transact from their UPI account, while UPI Reserve Pay enables the management of credit limits for specific purposes. Razorpay’s banking partners, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, are backing this service.

Tata group’s BigBasket, a leading online grocery retailer, is one of the first merchants to integrate this AI-native payment method. An illustrative use case involves a user asking ChatGPT to ‘Help me order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket.’ The AI agent then searches BigBasket’s catalog, presents product options, and, upon user confirmation, places the order via Razorpay’s payment stack. Users maintain full control over their purchases, with options for real-time tracking and instant revocation of orders, ensuring a secure and user-first experience.

Harshil Mathur, CEO & Co-Founder of Razorpay, emphasized the transformative potential, stating, “With Agentic Payments, we are transforming AI assistants from simple discovery tools into full-fledged shopping agents. For the first time in India, every buyer can have a personal shopping assistant that not only finds the best product at the perfect price but also completes the entire purchase journey seamlessly. This is India’s very own UPI-integrated conversational payment experience, powered by Razorpay and built on innovations like UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay, bringing world-class AI capabilities to Indian consumers in a truly first-of-its-kind experience in the country.”

Oliver Jay, Managing Director of International Strategy at OpenAI, added, “AI is evolving from helping people find products to actually helping them buy them, while also helping sellers reach millions of people.”

The collaboration between Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI will continue to explore diverse AI-based payment use cases, including personalized and secure AI commerce through conversational shopping and checkout experiences. The long-term vision includes enabling AI agents with payment credentials to autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users in a safe, secure, and user-controlled manner, expanding across various commerce verticals. This private beta marks the initial step towards a future where AI seamlessly handles payments, from groceries to mobile recharges, securely on behalf of the user.
