Melbourne’s Boman Group Makes Strategic AI Bets with Investments in Anthropic and OpenAI

TLDR: Melbourne-based fund manager Boman Group has significantly expanded its strategic investments in leading artificial intelligence companies, including a notable A$10 million stake in OpenAI’s recent US$6.6 billion funding round. This move, alongside investments in Anthropic, underscores Boman Group’s “Unicorn Strategy” to back high-growth, disruptive AI technologies. The investments come amidst a rapidly evolving AI landscape, characterized by massive funding rounds and increasing scrutiny over investment vehicles like Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

Melbourne, Australia – Boman Group, a prominent Melbourne-based fund manager, has made significant strategic investments in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector, acquiring stakes in industry leaders OpenAI and Anthropic. This bold move highlights the firm’s commitment to pioneering technology and its “Unicorn Strategy” of targeting high-growth, late-stage technology companies poised for substantial capital events.

Boman Group, founded in 2011 as BMY Group by Eric Gao and Julius Wei and rebranded in 2024, currently manages approximately $600 million in assets. The firm committed A$10 million to OpenAI’s recent US$6.6 billion (A$9.5 billion) fundraising round, which valued the artificial intelligence giant at an impressive US$157 billion (A$230 billion). This places Boman Group among an elite cohort of global investors, including Thrive Capital, Nvidia, Microsoft, Khosla Ventures, SoftBank, and MGX (Abu Dhabi).

Eva Zhuang, Boman’s Executive Director, spearheaded the OpenAI investment, navigating complex negotiations and time zone challenges to secure the deal in under a month. “This was a hard deal to get over the line considering the speed in which it was conducted combined with the interest, valuation and the timezones involved,” Zhuang stated. “But we are thrilled to have secured a placement in the world’s fastest growing technology company.”

Boman Group’s AI-forward vision dates back to 2021, with a deliberate focus on backing firms demonstrating scalable and disruptive potential. Zhuang emphasized that the declining costs of training and deploying AI, coupled with a surge in productivity gains, are creating unprecedented opportunities. She cited Klarna, a Boman portfolio company and an early adopter of OpenAI’s technology, as a prime example. Klarna’s AI assistant has successfully handled 2.3 million customer chats, resulting in savings equivalent to 700 full-time agents and a US$40 million boost in profitability.

Boman CEO Eric Gao further justified the investment by highlighting OpenAI’s remarkable growth trajectory. ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship chatbot, achieved 100 million global users in just two months, a record-breaking pace in tech history. Currently, over 92% of Fortune 500 companies are clients of OpenAI, signaling its dominant market position.

The broader AI investment landscape is experiencing a funding frenzy, with Anthropic, another leading AI powerhouse, recently securing a jaw-dropping $13 billion in Series F funding, valuing the company at $183 billion. However, this rapid influx of capital has also led to increased scrutiny. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are tightening restrictions on certain investment vehicles, particularly Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), which are popular for pooling capital into single-company bets. Concerns regarding transparency, governance, security, and potential fraud associated with SPVs have prompted these companies to act. OpenAI has already implemented restrictions on share transfers and pursued legal action against unauthorized SPV activity, while Anthropic has warned backers about potential exclusion from funding rounds if they participate in unapproved vehicles. U.S. regulators are also intensifying their scrutiny of foreign investment in sensitive industries like AI, with both companies holding U.S. government contracts that mandate disclosure of ultimate beneficial owners. As one investor noted to the Financial Times, “With demand far exceeding supply, these companies have the leverage to dictate terms.”

Despite the substantial funding, adoption rates vary. While OpenAI has raised 31% more funds than Anthropic, its AI models are adopted by twice as many organizations. In January, ChatGPT recorded 128 million global traffic, significantly outpacing Anthropic’s Claude at 2.5 million, demonstrating OpenAI’s broader market penetration.
