MITI Pledges High-Tech Career Development for Malaysian Youth, Aims for Generative AI Hub Status by 2030

TLDR: Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is committed to fostering high-tech career opportunities for the nation’s youth, driven by systematic reindustrialisation. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz highlighted three core pillars: industrial development, investment promotion, and international trade. Key initiatives include training 60,000 engineers for the semiconductor industry and establishing Malaysia as a generative AI hub by 2030.

KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is intensifying its efforts to systematically reindustrialise Malaysia, with a strong focus on creating high-value career opportunities for the nation’s youth. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced this commitment during his keynote address at the Youth Empowerment Fair, themed “Empowering Youth in the Digital Workforce,” held on September 14, 2025.

Tengku Zafrul emphasized that MITI’s strategy is built upon three core pillars: industrial development, investment promotion, and international trade. These pillars are designed to enable young Malaysians to thrive in a rapidly evolving high-tech environment. “We want to ensure that a ‘Made in Malaysia’ stamp becomes a mark of quality and innovation. This, in turn, will create the high-value jobs of the future,” he stated.

Central to this vision are key national policies such as the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS). These policies not only guide the country’s reindustrialisation efforts but also actively encourage industries to adopt high technology and digitalization. A significant mission of the NSS is to train 60,000 highly skilled engineers specifically for the semiconductor industry, addressing a critical talent gap.

In a bold move towards technological leadership, Tengku Zafrul declared Malaysia’s ambition to become a generative artificial intelligence (AI) hub by 2030. “To position the country as a creator and innovator in the AI space, we aim to integrate this powerful technology across the entire economy,” he affirmed.

MITI and its associated agencies are actively co-creating clear career pathways for young people. For instance, the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and Internet of Things Institute (MARii) is establishing dedicated digital hubs. These hubs are focused on developing expertise in crucial areas such as data analytics, robotics, and AI, particularly for the future of the automotive and mobility sectors. Additionally, the Engineering Talent for Semiconductor Industry programme, a collaborative effort between Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) and the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), offers structured internships and specialized training to cultivate engineers for high-tech industries.

These initiatives are designed to ensure that industrial growth is underpinned by a robust talent pipeline. Tengku Zafrul highlighted that these programmes will enable Malaysian youths and graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to secure high-value, high-paying roles within the industry. Furthermore, on the international trade front, MITI is working to cultivate a dynamic and competitive trading environment. This involves promoting exports to global markets and encouraging industries to adopt the highest international standards and the latest technological advancements, thereby supporting youth careers in a globalized economy.
