TLDR: Anthropic has made its enterprise-grade generative AI chatbot, Claude, widely available to the entire staff of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This significant deployment, encompassing up to 10,000 employees, aims to accelerate scientific research and data analysis within the Energy Department’s national lab system. The expansion follows a successful pilot program and a ‘1,000 Scientist AI Jam’ event held in February 2025.
Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, announced on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the widespread availability of its enterprise chatbot, Claude, to all employees at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California. This move marks one of the most substantial deployments of generative AI within the Department of Energy’s national lab system, granting up to ten thousand national lab employees access to the advanced AI tool for their work.
The expansion of Claude’s accessibility at LLNL comes after a successful pilot program and a ‘1,000 Scientist AI Jam’ event in February 2025. During this event, thousands of scientists at the California lab had the opportunity to explore and learn about the technology, testing Claude’s capabilities across a range of scientific tasks, including problem understanding, literature search, hypothesis generation, experiment planning, code generation, and result analysis.
This strategic enhancement is poised to redefine how research operations are conducted at LLNL, providing a powerful tool for data analysis, hypothesis generation, and research exploration. By integrating Claude into its workflow, LLNL aims to accelerate research timelines and improve the quality of data-driven decision-making processes.
Security remains a paramount concern in such deployments. Anthropic has confirmed that LLNL will eventually gain access to a forthcoming FedRAMP High service for Claude, once it receives approval and accreditation. This will enable lab scientists to utilize Claude on unclassified data that requires this stringent level of accreditation, ensuring security compliance within a robust framework.
Thiyagu Ramasamy, Anthropic’s head of public sector, expressed the company’s commitment to the partnership, stating, ‘We’re honored to support LLNL’s mission of making the world a safer place through science and technology. This partnership shows what’s possible when Anthropic’s cutting-edge AI meets world-class scientific expertise.’
