TLDR: LY Corp, the operator of Yahoo! Search in Japan, has launched a new generative AI service that summarizes user reviews for approximately 47,000 commercial facilities nationwide. This feature aims to streamline information gathering for users by extracting up to five key characteristics from reviews, addressing common challenges like information overload and outdated data.
Tokyo, Japan – LY Corp, the company behind Yahoo! Search in Japan, has officially rolled out an innovative generative artificial intelligence feature designed to revolutionize how users access information about commercial facilities. Announced on August 4, 2025, and updated on August 5, 2025, this new service leverages AI to condense vast amounts of user reviews into concise summaries for an estimated 47,000 shopping malls, retail stores, and department stores across Japan.
The primary goal of this initiative is to alleviate common frustrations faced by users when researching facilities. A survey conducted by LY Corp between July 7 and 10, involving 365 users, revealed that a significant 63.6 percent encountered difficulties. These challenges included an overwhelming volume of reviews making it hard to pinpoint necessary information, insufficient facility details, and the presence of outdated information. The new AI system directly addresses these issues by displaying up to five salient characteristics extracted from user feedback directly within search results.
Previously, users had to navigate through individual reviews presented in list format from sources like Yahoo Maps. Now, the AI processes reviews posted within a specified timeframe, intelligently extracting insights related to user experiences, facility ratings, and important considerations for visitors. This streamlined approach allows for quicker and more efficient information retrieval.
The AI-powered review summarization is accessible across multiple platforms, including the Yahoo Japan mobile application for both iOS and Android devices, the smartphone browser version of Yahoo Japan, and through the web search function integrated into the LINE application. It’s important to note that review summaries are only generated for facilities that have accumulated a minimum number of user reviews, though the specific threshold has not been disclosed by the company.

LY Corp has confirmed that the underlying technology for this feature utilizes OpenAI’s application programming interface. While embracing this advanced AI, the company has also issued a disclaimer, stating that it does not guarantee the reliability, accuracy, completeness, or effectiveness of the AI-generated results. Furthermore, the reported count of 47,000 facilities is an estimate as of July 30, 2025, and is subject to fluctuation. The service operates under LINEYahoo’s standard terms of use and specific guidelines tailored for AI-generated review summarization, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the user experience on Yahoo! Search.
