The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has marked a significant milestone with the launch of the Artificial Intelligence and the Law Institute, positioning itself at the forefront of ethical innovation in Africa. This pioneering institute, based at UJ’s Auckland Park campus, is dedicated to crafting comprehensive legal, regulatory, and ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence and other new technologies.
The institute will serve as a collaborative hub, bringing together academics, legal professionals, policymakers, and industry experts. Their collective mission is to promote responsible innovation while steadfastly upholding principles of justice, fairness, and human dignity in the rapidly evolving digital age. A key objective is to establish fair and transparent rules governing the deployment and application of AI.
Professor Charles Maimela, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law, emphasized the university’s commitment, stating, “This institute shows our commitment to ensuring AI serves humanity through law, ethics, collaboration and innovation.” He added, “UJ is proud to lead Africa in building the legal knowledge that will guide the responsible and creative use of technology.”
The institute is designed to facilitate inter-faculty collaboration, bridging social sciences with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to achieve meaningful societal impact. It will integrate AI into legal education through creative and inclusive teaching methods, preparing future lawyers to demonstrate honesty, creative thinking, and make a tangible difference in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

Ethical guidelines for AI in law will underscore the importance of human oversight, confidentiality, and accountability, ensuring that AI functions as a tool to augment, rather than replace, legal judgment. The launch event featured prominent speakers, including UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, and a keynote address by Justice Dunstan Mlambo, Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa.
