TLDR: Northern Ireland has launched its inaugural Responsible AI Hub, an online resource developed by the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC) to assist businesses, policymakers, and individuals in understanding and ethically applying artificial intelligence.
Northern Ireland has taken a significant step towards fostering ethical technological advancement with the launch of its first Responsible AI Hub. Spearheaded by the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC), a collaborative initiative led by Ulster University in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, this groundbreaking online resource aims to guide businesses, policymakers, and individuals in the responsible adoption and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Hub, developed by the AICC and led by Tadhg Hickey, Head of AI and Digital Ethics Policy, operates on the core principle that responsible AI is a collective responsibility. It offers practical and accessible tools and guidance for both AI novices and those already developing and deploying AI solutions, encouraging users to ‘be good with AI’.
Supported by Invest Northern Ireland and the Department for the Economy, the Responsible AI Hub consolidates clear guidance, ethical frameworks, and practical governance tools, making responsible AI accessible to a broad audience. By enabling organizations to integrate robust governance from the outset, the Hub is designed to facilitate faster, safer innovation and mitigate the risks of costly retrofits or regulatory non-compliance in the future.
The platform caters to a diverse range of users, from business leaders and policymakers to developers, researchers, and the general public, providing step-by-step support to comprehend and implement responsible AI practices. Among its comprehensive resources are a Data Fact Sheet Developer, Harm Assessments, an Idea Testing Tool, an AI Policy Builder, and a suite of Project Governance Tools. These tools, created by AICC’s in-house team of applied researchers and data scientists, are already being integrated into SME collaborations to promote transparent and responsible AI development across Northern Ireland.
Tadhg Hickey commented on the initiative, stating, “We built the Responsible AI Hub because AI shouldn’t feel out of reach. Whether you’re curious about what responsible AI means or designing complex AI solutions, the Hub provides the clarity and confidence to innovate responsibly.”
David Crozier CBE, Director of the AICC, added, “The Responsible AI Hub is about building a culture where innovation and integrity go hand in hand. It empowers businesses, individuals, and communities to be confident and capable with AI, strengthening Northern Ireland’s position as a global leader in trusted, human-centred innovation.”
