Tether Launches Open-Source Wallet Development Kit to Advance Decentralized Finance for Humans and AI

TLDR: Tether has released its Wallet Development Kit (WDK) as an open-source framework, aiming to democratize access to self-custodial, multi-chain wallets for individuals, machines, and AI agents. This initiative seeks to build a resilient, decentralized financial infrastructure free from centralized control and proprietary restrictions.

Tether, a leading entity in the digital asset ecosystem, announced today, October 17, 2025, the open-source release of its Wallet Development Kit (WDK). This innovative toolkit is designed to empower a broad spectrum of users, including humans, autonomous machines, and artificial intelligence (AI) agents, to independently construct, deploy, and manage secure, multi-chain, self-custodial wallets. The overarching goal is to foster a truly decentralized financial infrastructure that champions global financial freedom.

The WDK is engineered to be ecosystem-agnostic, supporting a wide array of prominent blockchain networks. These include Bitcoin and its Lightning Network, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, TON, and Solana. This broad compatibility ensures that developers can create versatile wallet solutions capable of operating across diverse blockchain environments. Key features of the WDK encompass cross-chain asset transfers, a robust DeFi module, customizable user interfaces, and advanced secure key management capabilities. The kit also provides starter wallets for both iOS and Android, along with cross-platform building blocks, significantly reducing development time for common wallet functionalities.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, emphasized the foundational importance of self-custodial wallets. “Self-custodial wallets are the cornerstone of a free and resilient monetary infrastructure,” Ardoino stated. “We imagine a world where humans, autonomous machines, and AI Agents have the freedom to control their own finances. In that future, where programmable money is the social network across the fabric of society, WDK by Tether is the cornerstone of the financial backbone, a fully open-source, self-custodial toolkit designed to be modular, independent, resilient, and infinitely scalable, enabling trillions of wallets.”

Unlike many commercial wallet frameworks that impose fees or restrict developers to specific ecosystems, Tether’s WDK is entirely open-source and free to use. This approach allows anyone to audit the code, contribute to its development, and build white-label wallet solutions without concerns about vendor lock-in. The company highlighted that its forthcoming self-managed wallet, Rumble Wallet, is built upon this very WDK framework, showcasing its practical application. The release is expected to expand self-custody adoption and lower integration costs for applications requiring wallet functionality. The WDK is currently available through Tether’s wallet hub and its GitHub repository.
