TLDR: Mastercard has launched a new agentic token framework, including ‘Agent Pay’ and ‘Agentic Tokens,’ to enhance the security, reliability, and transparency of transactions conducted by artificial intelligence agents. This initiative aims to enable trusted AI-powered shopping experiences for consumers and automate business processes, leveraging Mastercard’s existing tokenization technology and fostering industry-wide collaboration.
Mastercard is spearheading the evolution of digital commerce with the introduction of its agentic token framework, a significant stride towards ensuring trusted and secure transactions within the burgeoning realm of AI-driven commerce. This comprehensive initiative, highlighted by the launch of ‘Mastercard Agent Pay’ and ‘Agentic Tokens,’ is designed to empower AI agents to conduct transactions on behalf of consumers and businesses with unprecedented levels of security, transparency, and user control.
At the core of this framework are Agentic Tokens, dynamic digital credentials that extend Mastercard’s proven tokenization technology—currently safeguarding mobile, online, and contactless payments—into the agentic commerce landscape. These tokens enable AI agents to transact safely and transparently, ensuring that each transaction is grounded in advanced security protocols. Mastercard Agent Pay integrates these agentic tokens to deliver smarter, more secure, and personalized payment experiences.
The move comes as AI agents are rapidly becoming ‘first-class citizens’ across critical financial systems, automating tasks from compliance checks to trade analysis and credit decisions. Recognizing the dual nature of AI agents—as both potential fraud multipliers and powerful fraud fighters—Mastercard’s framework is built to mitigate risks while harnessing AI’s benefits. Mastercard’s existing AI-driven fraud detection system already monitors over 160 billion transactions annually, demonstrating AI’s capability to outpace fraudsters when properly governed.
Mastercard’s chief services officer, Craig Vosburg, emphasized the transformative nature of AI-powered payments, stating, ‘AI-powered payments aren’t just a trend — they’re a transformation. Payments must be native to the agentic experience. We’re building the infrastructure for a new generation of intelligent transactions, where consumers and developers can empower AI agents to act on their behalf with trust, transparency and precision.’ Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, added, ‘We’re committed to enabling a trusted environment for AI-powered payments to scale globally.’
The framework ensures that every agent-initiated transaction is tied to a specific, authorized interaction, providing users with clarity on which agent acted on their behalf and for what purpose. This includes advanced fraud prevention and dispute support, making agentic transactions more intelligent, secure, and personalized. Agentic tokens are built to register, verify, and recognize these transactions, ensuring agents operate within user-defined permissions and limits, thus maintaining full consumer control.
Mastercard is actively collaborating across the ecosystem to establish industry standards and expand the reach of agentic commerce. Key partnerships include working with OpenAI, with Mastercard Agent Pay and Agentic Tokens now usable on OpenAI’s platform for Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. Further collaborations involve Microsoft (exploring use cases with Azure OpenAI Service and Copilot Studio), IBM (for B2B applications with watsonx Orchestrate), Stripe, Google, and Ant International’s Antom. Mastercard is also partnering with payment processors like Braintree and Checkout.com, and enabling banks like Citi and US Bank to integrate tokenized credentials into AI platforms.
In a significant move to define how payments should operate in agentic environments, Mastercard is working with the FIDO Alliance and its Payments Working Group to develop a verifiable credential standard. This standard will confirm payment details such as amount, merchant, and product, ensuring transactions are approved by the shopper and fostering a secure, seamless, and trusted foundation for agentic payments. This commitment to responsible AI development underpins all of Mastercard’s efforts in this space.
