TLDR: The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and OWASP have introduced MAESTRO, a seven-layer threat modeling framework designed to secure generative and agentic AI. This framework addresses the unique and complex security challenges posed by autonomous AI agents, which traditional security models are ill-equipped to handle. MAESTRO aims to provide a structured approach for identifying and mitigating AI-specific threats across the entire AI lifecycle.
In a significant development for the cybersecurity of artificial intelligence, the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and the OWASP GenAI Security Project’s Agentic Security Initiative (ASI) have unveiled MAESTRO (Multi-Agent Environment, Security, Threat, Risk, and Outcome), a groundbreaking threat modeling framework. Introduced in February 2025, with further details emerging through August 2025, MAESTRO is specifically engineered to address the intricate security challenges inherent in generative and agentic AI systems, including Multi-Agent Systems (MAS).
Traditional threat modeling frameworks, such as STRIDE, PASTA, LINDDUN, and OCTAVE, were developed for predictable software logic and have proven inadequate for the dynamic, autonomous, and learning nature of modern AI agents. These legacy approaches fall short in confronting issues like adversarial attacks, goal misalignment, and the unpredictable decisions that can arise from emergent AI behaviors. MAESTRO fills this critical gap by offering a dedicated, layered defense mechanism.
The MAESTRO framework is structured as a seven-layer reference architecture, providing a comprehensive and granular approach to proactively identify and mitigate risks throughout the entire AI lifecycle. It extends existing security frameworks by integrating AI-specific considerations, focusing on unique threats that arise from advanced AI capabilities. Key threats addressed by MAESTRO include memory poisoning, tool misuse, agent communication poisoning, rogue agents, privilege compromise, hallucination/policy manipulation attacks, unintended tool use, prompt injection, and data poisoning.

According to the CSA, MAESTRO is designed for security engineers, AI researchers, and developers working with these advanced systems. It empowers them to build robust, secure, and trustworthy AI systems by systematically analyzing potential threats, vulnerabilities, attack vectors, risks, and mitigations. The framework emphasizes understanding vulnerabilities within each layer of an agent’s architecture, how these layers interact, and the evolving nature of AI threats. Adopting a MAESTRO-aligned strategy is becoming foundational for any organization looking to innovate securely with autonomous AI.
