TLDR: The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a pilot program, “TN SPARK,” this academic year to equip students in government schools from Classes 6 to 9 with skills in AI applications, robotics, coding, and interactive online tools. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, provide access to advanced technology, and prepare students for future technological advancements, ensuring equal exposure to emerging digital trends regardless of socio-economic background.
In a significant stride towards fostering digital literacy and bridging the technological divide, the Tamil Nadu government has rolled out a pioneering pilot programme this academic year. Titled the “Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools” (TN SPARK), this initiative aims to train government school students from Classes 6 to 9 in critical future-ready skills, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, robotics, coding, and interactive online tools. This move ensures that exposure to advanced technologies is no longer confined to private educational institutions.
The TN SPARK programme is designed with a comprehensive vision: to provide students with access to cutting-edge technology, develop their problem-solving abilities, and enhance their digital literacy. Officials involved in the programme have highlighted that it is crucial for preparing students for future academic and career opportunities in an increasingly technology-driven world. The ultimate goal is to cultivate a tech-savvy generation capable of adapting to and thriving amidst emerging digital trends, irrespective of their socio-economic background.
The pilot phase of TN SPARK is currently being implemented in 85 government schools across the Coimbatore district. This initial rollout includes 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. To facilitate effective learning, dedicated bilingual textbooks have been prepared in both English and Tamil, ensuring accessibility and comprehension for all students. Trained mathematics and science teachers have been specially designated to conduct the TN SPARK classes.
Each participating school has allocated one or two periods per week for these specialized classes. The programme leverages approximately 880 hi-tech lab computers to deliver its curriculum effectively. While the modules commenced with introductory sessions, the full syllabus is slated to be in full swing from October, following the quarterly examinations.
The curriculum is robust, introducing students to the foundational principles of computer science. This includes essential concepts such as algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualisation. Furthermore, it integrates online educational tools that offer interactive lessons across a diverse range of subjects, including science, geography, anatomy, and various languages. The Artificial Intelligence modules specifically aim to familiarise students with creative applications of AI, equipping them with practical knowledge and skills for the digital age.
