China Implements Mandatory AI Education for All Schoolchildren from September 2025

TLDR: Starting September 1, 2025, China will mandate artificial intelligence (AI) classes for all schoolchildren, from primary to secondary levels. This initiative requires a minimum of eight hours of AI instruction annually, with tailored curricula for different age groups. The move underscores China’s ambition to become a global leader in AI innovation and cultivate a future-ready, tech-literate workforce.

Beijing, China – In a landmark decision set to reshape its educational landscape and global technological standing, China has announced that artificial intelligence (AI) education will become mandatory for all schoolchildren across the nation, commencing September 1, 2025. This sweeping reform will encompass students from primary through secondary school, including children as young as six years old.

Under the new policy, every student will receive a minimum of eight hours of AI instruction each academic year. The curriculum is designed to be age-appropriate, introducing younger students to foundational AI concepts through engaging and practical, hands-on activities. As students progress, older children will delve into more complex subjects such as machine learning, robotics, and real-world applications of AI. Schools will have the flexibility to integrate these AI lessons into existing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects or offer them as standalone courses, depending on their specific educational frameworks.

This bold educational mandate is a cornerstone of China’s broader national strategy to establish itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence. The primary objective is to cultivate a future-ready workforce, equipped with the necessary skills to drive innovation and dominate global technology. Authorities believe that early exposure to AI will significantly reduce the learning curve and ignite a passion for careers in science and technology among the youth, thereby strengthening the nation’s innovative capabilities.

Education experts are hailing this initiative as a “game-changer,” emphasizing that China is effectively elevating AI literacy to the same fundamental level as reading and mathematics. Globally, this move sends a powerful signal: while many countries are still deliberating the integration of AI into education, China is proactively embedding it into foundational learning to foster not just AI users, but future leaders in the field. This strategic positioning aims to make China a pioneer in global AI literacy.

China’s Minister of Education, Huai Jinpeng, underscored the significance of this reform, stating that AI is a driving force behind a technological revolution that presents immense educational opportunities. He also announced that a white paper on AI education, outlining strategic policies, goals, and methodologies for AI integration, is slated for release in 2025.

While other nations like California and Italy are also exploring ways to incorporate AI literacy and tools into their school curricula, China’s aggressive and comprehensive approach to integrate AI into foundational learning from an early age distinguishes its commitment. In some regions, such as Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, compulsory AI education has already begun, with schools expected to provide at least 10 hours of AI lessons per academic year.
