The highly anticipated third cohort of the ICONN NINJA India Programme is now accepting applications, marking a significant opportunity for Indian startups focused on innovation in critical sectors. Launched through a strategic partnership between the CII Centre of Excellence for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Startups (CIES), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Deloitte Tohmatsu Venture Support (DTVS), this program aims to foster Indo-Japanese collaboration and accelerate the growth of promising ventures.
The program is specifically designed to support Indian startups that offer innovative and scalable solutions across a broad spectrum of emerging sectors, with a particular emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI), mobility, and rural technology. Other key areas include sustainability, healthcare, agriculture, and digital technology. To be eligible, startups must demonstrate at least a proof of concept or early market validation for their solutions.
Selected participants will benefit from a comprehensive support system, including invaluable mentorship from industry experts, opportunities for corporate partnerships, and pilot projects. The program also provides crucial access to both Japanese and Indian markets, along with enhanced visibility to a network of investors. The cohort is structured to run for approximately three months, incorporating a blend of virtual and in-person engagements to maximize learning and networking.
Several prominent challenge owners are participating, presenting unique opportunities for startups. Suzuki, for instance, is seeking innovators to integrate sensors, AI, tools, or industry-specific systems into its Versatile Micro Electric Mobility (VMeM) platform – a compact, all-terrain, zero-emission vehicle designed for challenging environments. The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) is spearheading the Asia Inclusive and Innovative Leadership Program, inviting solutions to revitalize rural communities through themes like livelihoods, sustainable resources, healthcare, education, and financial innovation. Additionally, challenges focus on optimizing field operations and customer support using gig workers, emphasizing efficient task allocation and management systems.

Discussions at previous program events, such as a Demo Day held earlier in the year, underscored the critical importance of AI adoption. Madhu Vasanthy, Principal Adviser at CII CIES, highlighted CII’s pivotal role in promoting Indo-Japanese collaboration, stating, ‘CII was nominated as the nodal agency to partner with JICA in promoting trade and economic growth.’ Industry leaders like Morimoto Tsuyoshi of DENSO International India, Yasukawa Nobuyuki of NEC, Rajesh Gopalakrishna of Murata India, and Gautham Sivaramakrishnan of Blume Ventures have emphasized the need for innovation and AI integration. A stark warning was issued, suggesting that ‘companies not leveraging AI by 2025 could face obsolescence.’ Startups like SOL9X, with its Code Gen AI platform for automated code generation and testing, and AI Planet, offering an end-to-end AI orchestration platform, exemplify the kind of AI-driven solutions the program aims to nurture.
