Spear AI Secures Seed Funding to Advance Maritime Artificial Intelligence Solutions

TLDR: Spear AI, a developer of maritime AI solutions, has successfully closed its seed funding round with investments from Scare the Bear Capital and Cortical Ventures. This funding, totaling $2.3 million, will accelerate the expansion of Spear AI’s product portfolio, scale its Horizon platform, and enhance its specialized maritime sensor capabilities, while also broadening its technical and subject matter expert services in applied data and AI.

WASHINGTON, July 25, 2025 – Spear AI, a leading innovator in maritime artificial intelligence solutions, today announced the successful completion of its seed funding round. The investment, led by Scare the Bear Capital and Cortical Ventures, amounts to $2.3 million and is set to significantly bolster the company’s efforts in advancing AI for the maritime domain.

The newly secured capital will be instrumental in expanding Spear AI’s product portfolio, including the scaling of its flagship Horizon platform. This platform is crucial for managing and labeling acoustic data, which is vital for AI development in maritime applications. Furthermore, the funding will support the growth of Spear AI’s specialized maritime sensor capabilities and allow for the expansion of its technical and subject matter expert services in applied data and AI.

Michael Hunter, co-founder and CEO of Spear AI, expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, stating, “This investment is a validation of our vision to transform maritime data into actionable intelligence.” He emphasized that both Scare the Bear Capital and Cortical Ventures understand the critical need for delivering operationally relevant AI at the edge, and their support will enable faster delivery to defense and commercial partners.

John McGunnigle, co-founder, Executive Chairman, and CTO, added, “Our mission has always been to close the gap between emerging AI technology and real-world mission demands. This funding enables us to grow our technical services and engineering teams to help more partners build the data and AI capabilities they need to operate faster, safer, and smarter in the maritime domain.”

Founded in 2021 by U.S. Navy veterans, Spear AI specializes in applying artificial intelligence to analyze passive acoustic data gathered by submarines, aiming to help military operators distinguish between different underwater sounds and assess potential threats. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in Falmouth, MA, and Groton, CT, Spear AI develops modular AI application software and affordable maritime sensors designed for rapid deployment. The company provides an integrated suite of solutions and services, combining cutting-edge software, modular sensors, and highly specialized engineering expertise. Their teams of machine learning engineers, data engineers, software engineers, cloud architects, and operational subject matter experts have a proven track record in developing and fielding applied AI capabilities for national security missions, including advanced MLOps pipelines, reinforcement learning platforms, and mission-critical decision support tools.
