SoftBank’s Second Quarter Profit Surges on AI Stock Boom, Market Bubble Concerns Emerge

TLDR: Japan’s SoftBank Group announced a significant increase in its net profit for the second quarter (July-September) of 2025, more than doubling to 2.5 trillion yen ($16.2 billion). This robust performance is primarily attributed to the booming market for AI-related shares. The tech investment giant also disclosed the sale of $5.8 billion in Nvidia shares and its involvement in the $500 billion ‘Stargate’ project aimed at building AI infrastructure in the United States, alongside OpenAI and Oracle. Despite the strong gains, analysts and market observers are raising concerns about a potential AI market bubble.

Japan’s SoftBank Group has reported an exceptional second quarter for 2025, with net profit soaring to 2.5 trillion yen ($16.2 billion) for the July-September period. This figure represents more than double the 1.2 trillion yen recorded in the same quarter last year, a surge largely propelled by the robust performance of AI-related share prices across global markets.

The tech investment conglomerate, known for its aggressive stakes in innovative companies, highlighted the significant impact of the artificial intelligence sector on its earnings. This optimism surrounding AI technology has fueled a rush of multi-billion-dollar deals worldwide, contributing to a substantial uplift in tech shares. Wall Street’s tech-rich Nasdaq index, for instance, has seen a 25 percent surge since May.

However, this rapid growth has also ignited fears of a potential market bubble, drawing parallels to the dot-com boom that eventually imploded at the turn of the millennium. SoftBank’s earnings, which are inherently volatile due to its heavy investments in tech start-ups and semiconductor firms, are particularly susceptible to such market fluctuations.

Further demonstrating its strategic moves in the AI space, SoftBank announced the sale of $5.8 billion worth of shares in US chip giant Nvidia last month, following the close of the second quarter. Nvidia, whose advanced chips are critical for training and powering generative AI systems, recently achieved a valuation exceeding $5 trillion, though its market capitalization has since adjusted to approximately $4.8 trillion.

SoftBank’s commitment to the AI frontier extends to major infrastructure projects. The company, alongside ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and cloud giant Oracle, is a key leader in the ambitious $500 billion ‘Stargate’ project, designed to establish extensive AI infrastructure within the United States. SoftBank’s founder, Masayoshi Son, is a vocal proponent of ‘artificial superintelligence,’ believing it will usher in a new era of technological revolution.

The firm’s own stock has experienced a strong run, soaring over 140 percent so far in 2025, with much of this momentum attributed to excitement surrounding its exposure to OpenAI. In a related development, SoftBank also revealed plans last month to acquire Swiss-Swedish firm ABB Robotics for nearly $5.4 billion, a move aimed at advancing its ‘physical AI’ initiatives.

Despite the impressive financial results and strategic advancements, some analysts, including those from Jefferies equity research, advise caution. They point to OpenAI’s relatively small share in the enterprise market, the unresolved transition of OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit entity, its evolving relationship with Microsoft, and the intense competitive landscape featuring major players like Google, Anthropic, and Grok.
