Shopify Unveils Suite of AI-Powered Agentic Commerce Tools, Including Universal Cart, to Redefine Online Shopping

TLDR: Shopify has introduced a new set of AI-driven tools, including the Shopify Catalog, Universal Cart, and Checkout Kit, designed to integrate e-commerce functionality directly into AI agents and chatbots. This initiative aims to usher in an era of ‘agentic commerce,’ where AI facilitates seamless, conversational shopping experiences across multiple merchants and platforms, significantly expanding Shopify’s reach in the evolving digital retail landscape.

Shopify is spearheading a significant transformation in the e-commerce sector with the unveiling of its new suite of AI-powered agentic commerce tools, highlighted by the innovative Universal Cart. This strategic move, announced in early August 2025, positions Shopify at the forefront of the ‘AI age’ in retail, aiming to make shopping more intuitive and integrated within conversational AI experiences.

The core of Shopify’s latest offering comprises three pivotal tools: the Shopify Catalog, the Universal Cart, and the Checkout Kit. These tools are engineered to empower developers to seamlessly embed robust e-commerce capabilities into various applications and chatbots, thereby enabling what Shopify terms ‘agentic commerce.’

According to Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke, ‘Agents will become a common way people shop. We’re making that as easy as possible for the AI age.’ This vision underscores a shift from traditional search-based product discovery to a more interactive, AI-driven approach. As more consumers turn to AI chatbots for their needs, the ability to integrate commerce directly into these conversations becomes crucial for merchants to remain discoverable.

The Shopify Catalog serves as a comprehensive database, allowing AI agents to search product listings from millions of merchants. It provides real-time inventory data and localized pricing, ensuring accuracy and relevance. A key feature of the Catalog is its ability to categorize products with the same SKU under a universal product ID, which helps in reducing duplicates and delivering more precise search results. Furthermore, the Catalog includes visual components that can display complex product details such as bundles, subscriptions, and various size or color options, which developers can customize to match their application’s aesthetic.

The Universal Cart is a groundbreaking addition, enabling shoppers to consolidate products from multiple Shopify merchants into a single cart. This functionality streamlines the purchasing process, allowing users to manage their desired items from diverse stores in one place, even across different sessions or conversations. This eliminates the need for multiple checkouts, enhancing convenience for the end-user.

Complementing the Universal Cart is the Checkout Kit, which facilitates the direct embedding of Shopify’s highly optimized checkout experience into any chatbot or application. This integration ensures that the checkout process is not only secure and compliant with standards like GDPR, CCPA, and PCI DSS v4, but also customizable to align with the agent’s branding, providing a native feel to the shopping journey. Shopify also leverages MCP UI (Merchant Component Platform User Interface) to visually present products within AI agents, making the shopping experience more akin to a traditional online store despite the discovery happening within a chatbot.

Aaron Glazer, Shopify’s director of product, highlighted in a YouTube video that the Shopify Catalog allows agents to search hundreds of millions of products with real-time inventory and localized pricing. He also emphasized how the system handles complex product configurations like variants and bundles effortlessly.

Shopify’s broader strategy, as articulated by Lütke at the Editions.dev event, is that ‘AI isn’t just a feature – it’s the foundation.’ He believes AI will be as transformative to commerce as mobile adoption was in the late 2000s, ushering in an era of ‘fewer dashboards, more conversation,’ where merchants can interact with their storefronts conversationally. This comprehensive suite of tools signifies Shopify’s commitment to building the infrastructure for an AI-native future in commerce.
