Retail Titans Amazon and Walmart Intensify Battle for AI Super Agent Dominance

TLDR: Retail behemoths Amazon and Walmart are locked in a strategic competition to achieve ‘AI Super Agent Status,’ aiming to build foundational AI-based operating systems for commerce. Both companies are leveraging advanced AI agents to enhance customer experience, streamline internal operations, and gain a competitive edge through superior data, model quality, and fulfillment speed.

In a burgeoning technological arms race, retail giants Amazon and Walmart are reportedly vying for ‘AI Super Agent Status,’ signaling a profound shift towards integrating advanced artificial intelligence into the very core of their commercial operations. This strategic focus aims to establish foundational AI-based operating systems that will redefine commerce, with data, model quality, and fulfillment speed emerging as critical competitive advantages.

Amazon is reportedly pursuing a protocol-level integration of agentic AI, positioning itself at the intersection of enterprise AI and consumer commerce. This approach suggests a deep embedding of AI agents into the fundamental processes that govern its vast ecosystem, from supply chain to customer interaction.

Walmart, on the other hand, is embracing an institutional-level adoption of ‘super agents,’ a move designed to reshape not only the user experience but also internal operations and external relationships. Suresh Kumar, Walmart’s global chief technology and development officer, highlighted the company’s strategy to consolidate numerous individual AI agents under a more manageable framework of ‘super agents.’ Kumar noted that while individual agents for every use case can quickly become overwhelming for end-users, a team of ‘super agents’ can provide a more cohesive and efficient experience. Walmart is reorganizing its extensive array of AI capabilities under four primary ‘super agent’ personas: one for shoppers, one for store associates, one for suppliers and advertisers, and another for developers.

Among Walmart’s notable super agents is ‘Sparky,’ a shopping assistant designed to aid customers with tasks such as planning for occasions, summarizing product reviews, and setting up recurring household orders. Another, ‘Marty,’ is being developed to assist merchants in crafting ad campaigns and listing items. The internal super agents for employees and developers remain unnamed but are crucial for streamlining operations. Kumar emphasized the contextual awareness of these agents, stating, ‘The agent knows that you are a merchant. The agent knows that you are a store manager. The agent knows that you work in people services. And it also knows all our sub-agents that are there. It can coordinate.’ He anticipates a future with ‘tons and tons of sub-agents underneath as we start automating more capabilities, as we start addressing more use cases.’

Walmart is also building its agents to coordinate with various data sources through Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source framework that standardizes how agents connect with external systems. This interoperability aims to allow seamless transitions, such as ‘Sparky’ continuing a shopping journey initiated on another site, or an associates’ super agent communicating with an external AI agent for health insurance benefits.

Despite the rapid advancements, Kumar stressed that human oversight remains integral. In most cases, a human is still involved to evaluate response quality and fine-tune models, acknowledging that this is an ongoing journey. ‘It’s not like we are going to start on day one giving full access and full delegate authority and full capabilities to any single agent, even the super agent,’ Kumar affirmed.
