TLDR: Renfe has concluded the sixth edition of its TrenLab innovation accelerator, evaluating pilot projects from four startups focused on enhancing customer service and operational efficiency through advanced digital tools, including generative AI conversational assistants and AI-powered digital travel companions. Each startup received €50,000 for prototype development, with potential contracts of up to €1 million for successful integrations.
Madrid, Spain – Renfe, Spain’s national railway company, is pushing forward with its digital transformation strategy by exploring cutting-edge artificial intelligence and digital tools developed by startups from the sixth edition of its TrenLab innovation accelerator. Four promising startups presented their pilot projects, showcasing advanced solutions aimed at significantly improving customer service and operational efficiency across Renfe’s extensive network.
The “Demo Day” event, held on November 5, 2025, was chaired by Sonia Araujo, Renfe’s Director General for Innovation, Sustainability and Digital Transformation. Over six months, these startups collaborated closely with Renfe’s internal teams, each receiving €50,000 in funding to develop their prototypes, along with expert mentorship and technical guidance. Renfe will now meticulously evaluate these proposals to determine their operational viability and consider potential contracts worth up to €1 million for integrating the most impactful solutions into its operations.
Among the standout projects, Turing Challenge introduced a generative AI conversational assistant designed to provide personalized, multichannel, and real-time customer service. This innovative solution features three types of agents: a routing agent to direct queries, an information agent to deliver official Renfe responses, and a management agent to facilitate incident reporting and tracking through a helpdesk system.
Robot Technology Solutions (RTS) presented an AI-powered digital travel companion aimed at enriching the passenger experience at every stage of their journey – before, during, and after travel. RTS has previously been noted for offering a generative AI assistant for real-time passenger information.
TrenLab, since its inception in 2018, has established itself as a leading open innovation platform within the rail industry. It has seen participation from over 1,000 startups, successfully accelerating 26 of them. These collaborations have already resulted in commercial contracts exceeding €6 million, underscoring Renfe’s commitment to leveraging technological innovation for improved mobility, greater operational efficiency, and enhanced sustainability. The program also fosters cooperation with the entrepreneurial ecosystem, reaffirming its mission to drive digital transformation within the company.
