Reliance Forges Strategic AI Alliances with Meta and Google, Unveiling Jamnagar Cloud Region to Propel India’s AI Ambitions

TLDR: Reliance Industries has announced significant partnerships with Meta (formerly Facebook) and Google to establish an AI-focused cloud region in Jamnagar, India. This collaborative effort, backed by an initial investment of approximately US$100 million for the Meta joint venture, aims to accelerate AI growth, democratize AI access, and build open-source AI solutions for Indian businesses, leveraging Meta’s Llama models and Google Cloud’s advanced AI hyper-computer stack.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is set to revolutionize India’s artificial intelligence landscape through groundbreaking strategic alliances with global tech giants Meta and Google. The cornerstone of this ambitious initiative is the establishment of a state-of-the-art, AI-focused cloud region in Jamnagar, Gujarat, designed to democratize AI access and foster innovation across the nation.

The collaboration with Meta involves a joint venture with an initial investment of approximately Rs. 855 crore (US$100 million), where Reliance will hold a 70% stake. This venture will deploy Meta’s widely adopted open-source Llama models as an AI platform-as-a-service, offering customizable generative AI solutions tailored for Indian enterprises. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, emphasized the vision, stating, “Partnering with Meta brings our vision of providing AI to every Indian and enterprise to life, by combining Meta’s most widely adopted open-source Llama models with our deep expertise across multiple industries.” Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Meta, echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement to deepen the partnership and bring the power of open-source AI to Indian developers and enterprises, expanding Meta’s footprint in the enterprise space.

Simultaneously, Reliance is expanding its long-standing strategic partnership with Google Cloud. This collaboration will see Google Cloud deploy its cutting-edge AI hyper-computer and a secure, fully integrated AI stack, including generative AI models and a robust development platform, within the dedicated Jamnagar cloud region. This facility will integrate world-class AI and computing capabilities from Google Cloud, powered by Reliance’s green energy initiatives and connected via Jio’s advanced digital network. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, highlighted the transformative potential, remarking, “The AI opportunity in India is extraordinary. It will transform every industry and organisation, from the largest enterprises to the smallest kirana store.” He added that Google Cloud, as Reliance’s largest public cloud partner, is not only powering mission-critical workloads but also innovating on advanced AI initiatives.

This strategic move is expected to position Reliance at the forefront of India’s digital transformation, offering enterprise-grade AI at affordable prices with flexible deployment options. The Jamnagar cloud region will be a next-generation facility, fully compliant with Google Cloud’s global specifications, ensuring reliability for demanding AI workloads. It aims to enable faster innovation with advanced AI capabilities, modernize operations through secure infrastructure, and deliver AI-first services to a broad spectrum of clients, including enterprises, SMBs, startups, developers, and the public sector.

Reliance’s AI ambitions are further underpinned by Reliance Intelligence, a wholly-owned subsidiary tasked with building gigawatt-scale data centers powered by green energy. The first of these, in Jamnagar, will be connected via Reliance Jio’s fiber network. The Meta joint venture is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.
