Alibaba Shares Jump on Strong AI-Driven Cloud Performance

TLDR: Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. saw its shares surge by up to 15% in Hong Kong, driven by robust growth in its cloud computing division, particularly from AI-related services. The company reported triple-digit growth in AI-related product revenue and a 26% increase in overall cloud sales, exceeding market expectations and highlighting its strong position in the AI race.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. shares surged nearly 15% in Hong Kong on August 29, marking their biggest intraday jump since February. In pre-market trading, the stock also saw gains of 6% to 6.76% in the US. This impressive surge contributed to a nearly 50% year-to-date gain for Alibaba’s stock.

The primary catalyst for this strong market performance was the booming revenue from Alibaba’s Cloud Intelligence Group. The cloud division reported a significant 26% year-on-year sales increase, reaching 33.4 billion yuan ($4.7 billion), a notable acceleration from the 18% growth rate posted in the previous quarter.

A substantial portion of this cloud growth is directly attributed to advancements and services in artificial intelligence. AI-related product revenue experienced triple-digit growth for the eighth consecutive quarter, underscoring Alibaba’s robust progress in commercializing AI. CEO Eddie Wu emphasized this, stating, “Driven by robust AI demand, Cloud Intelligence Group experienced accelerated revenue growth, and AI-related product revenue is now a significant portion of revenue from external customers.”

Alibaba has outlined an ambitious long-term goal of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). As part of this strategy, the company has unveiled its latest large language model, Tongyi Qianwen, which is set to be integrated across its various business units to bolster its presence in the generative AI market. Furthermore, Alibaba Cloud has implemented aggressive pricing strategies, including slashing API prices by up to 97% for key cloud products such as Elastic Compute Service and Object Storage Service (OSS), aimed at driving broader adoption and ecosystem integration.

While Alibaba’s overall revenue for the quarter saw a modest 2% year-on-year increase to 247.65 billion Chinese yuan ($34.6 billion), falling slightly short of analyst expectations of 252.9 billion yuan, the market’s attention remained firmly on the exceptional cloud and AI performance. Adjusted net earnings for the period were down 18%, though net income saw a 78% year-on-year increase, primarily due to gains from equity investments and the disposal of its Turkish e-commerce firm, Trendyol.

Market analysts have reacted positively, with Morgan Stanley notably labeling Alibaba as “China’s best AI enabler thesis,” citing its formidable cloud strength and substantial investments in large language models and generative AI tools. This AI momentum has also helped to alleviate investor concerns regarding intense competition in the e-commerce and food delivery sectors, where rivals like JD.com and Meituan have been engaged in a bruising price war. Alibaba is also reportedly developing a new AI chip, a move that could further reduce its reliance on external providers like Nvidia.
