This strategic move is set to revolutionize online shopping and discovery by offering highly personalized, visual-first recommendations to its nearly 600 million monthly active users. The company aims to bridge the gap between inspiration and action, making it easier for users to find and purchase products that align with their unique styles and interests.
The new Pinterest Assistant is designed to address the common “I’ll know it when I see it” challenge faced by many shoppers. Unlike traditional search engines or chatbots that require users to know exactly what they are looking for, the Assistant provides proactive, visual, and personalized recommendations. It leverages advanced multimodal AI technology, capable of processing voice inputs, images, and text, allowing for a more natural and conversational interaction. Users can activate the assistant by holding down a microphone button, similar to sending a voice message, and ask for suggestions ranging from fashion outfits to home decor items.
According to Pinterest CEO Bill Ready, the platform has evolved significantly, effectively becoming an “AI-enabled shopping assistant” during his three-year tenure. Ready emphasized that AI is now central to Pinterest’s growth strategy, powering every stage of the user experience, from personalized recommendations to shoppable search results. He stated, “People come to Pinterest with intent. They arrive looking for ideas, and our job is to help them take action on that inspiration.”
The AI model behind the Pinterest Assistant and its recommendation systems is highly sophisticated. Pinterest’s systems learn from billions of user signals and its proprietary “Taste-graph,” enabling its latest multimodal AI model for visual search to outperform off-the-shelf models by over 30% in the relevancy of shopping recommendations. This advanced AI draws from a user’s saved items, boards, collages, and the tastes of others with similar styles to deliver tailored product suggestions.
In response to previous feedback regarding AI-generated content, Pinterest has also introduced new generative AI controls. These tools allow users to filter how much generative AI content appears in their feeds, demonstrating the company’s commitment to transparency and user control. AI-created images will also be clearly labeled.
