Getty Images Shares Soar on Landmark AI Licensing Deal with Perplexity

TLDR: Getty Images Holdings Inc. (NYSE: GETY) experienced a significant surge in its stock price following the announcement of a multi-year licensing agreement with AI search engine Perplexity. This partnership grants Perplexity access to Getty’s extensive library of creative and editorial imagery to enhance its AI-powered search and discovery tools, with a strong emphasis on proper content attribution and creator recognition.

Getty Images Holdings Inc. saw its shares skyrocket by over 50% in premarket trading on Friday, October 31, 2025, following the disclosure of a strategic global multi-year licensing agreement with AI search platform Perplexity. The deal, which sent GETY stock surging by as much as 58% to $3.10, underscores a growing trend of content providers partnering with artificial intelligence firms to ensure proper licensing and attribution.

Under the terms of the agreement, Perplexity will gain access to Getty Images’ vast collection of high-quality creative and editorial visuals. This imagery will be integrated into Perplexity’s AI-powered search and discovery tools, aiming to enrich the user experience with premium visual content. A crucial aspect of this collaboration involves the integration of Getty’s API technology into Perplexity’s content creation and display workflows. This technical integration is designed to facilitate seamless access to the visual library while simultaneously improving image attribution.

Both companies have highlighted the importance of intellectual property rights and content attribution in the evolving AI landscape. Perplexity has committed to enhancing its platform by including image credits with links to original sources, thereby educating users on the legal and ethical use of licensed content. Nick Unsworth, Vice President of Strategic Development at Getty Images, stated, “We are pleased to reach this agreement with Perplexity, which acknowledges the importance of properly attributed content and its value in enhancing AI-powered products.” Jessica Chan, Head of Content and Publisher Partnerships at Perplexity, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that “Attribution and accuracy are fundamental to how people should understand the world in an age of AI.”

This partnership comes amidst increasing scrutiny over how AI firms utilize copyrighted content. Getty Images has been a vocal advocate for content creators’ rights, having previously initiated legal action against platforms like Stability AI over unauthorized image scraping. Perplexity itself has faced copyright lawsuits from publishers such as Japan’s Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun, leading it to introduce a revenue-sharing model and forge partnerships with outlets like TIME and Der Spiegel.

Despite the positive market reaction to this deal, Getty Images has faced financial challenges in recent years. The company reported a revenue growth rate of -7.7% over the past three years and a negative net margin of -12.19%. Its balance sheet indicates a high level of leverage with a debt-to-equity ratio of 2.29. However, the company generated $946.83 million in revenue over the trailing twelve months and posted positive levered free cash flow of $96.59 million. The upcoming Q3 2025 earnings report, scheduled for November 10, 2025, is anticipated to provide further insights into the company’s financial trajectory and the impact of such strategic partnerships. The deal’s success is seen as a significant step for Getty Images in positioning itself at the intersection of traditional visual content licensing and emerging AI technology, addressing ongoing concerns about content attribution and creator compensation.
