TLDR: Optimizely has launched a new version of its Content Management System (CMS) with features specifically designed for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). This update aims to help businesses ensure their content remains visible and discoverable by AI-powered search engines, addressing concerns about potential declines in website traffic as AI tools become more prevalent for information discovery.
NEW YORK – Optimizely, a prominent provider of digital experience platforms, announced on July 29, 2025, significant enhancements to its Content Management System (CMS) to address the evolving landscape of online search. The new features are geared towards Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), a strategic approach to structuring content for optimal visibility within AI-powered search environments. This move comes as industry predictions suggest a potential 25% drop in traditional website traffic by 2026, largely due to the increasing reliance on generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for information retrieval.
Shafqat Islam, President of Optimizely, emphasized the urgency of this shift, stating, ‘Your website isn’t broken—it’s just invisible. The entire business model of the web is being upended, and how marketers generate demand or sell products is being transformed.’ He highlighted the critical need for marketers to cater to two distinct audiences: human readers who prioritize speed and clarity, and AI systems that extract and summarize content. Islam further added, ‘If your CMS isn’t structured for AI discoverability, your content won’t be found. With the combination of our new CMS features and power of Optimizely Opal, we help brands move faster, create content smarter, and scale for a world where machines, not just people, are consuming your content.’
The updated Optimizely CMS introduces capabilities across three core areas to enhance AI search visibility:
Page Optimization: This includes features like auto-generation of question-and-answer pairs based on page content, GEO-specific metadata population (titles, descriptions, and EEAT – Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness elements), and markdown summary generation for improved AI readability.
Site-Wide Optimization: To ensure content is effectively indexed and summarized by AI agents, the CMS offers `llms.txt` auto-generation to signal which pages should be indexed, GEO topic templates for ranking in AI-generated summaries, and bulk metadata population for existing content.
GEO Analytics: Recognizing that AI agents often read and reference content without triggering traditional clicks, Optimizely provides new analytics tools. These include a GEO health index to score pages against best practices, a crawl-to-refer ratio to measure AI bot activity versus site referrals, and crawl rate by model to show which large language models are most frequently interacting with a brand’s site.
