OpenAI Unveils Sora: A New AI-Powered Social App Revolutionizing Short Video Creation

TLDR: OpenAI has launched Sora, an invite-only iOS app that allows users to generate short, creative videos from text prompts, directly challenging platforms like TikTok. The app exclusively features AI-generated content, with videos up to 10 seconds long, and includes innovative features like ‘cameos’ where users can appear in AI-created videos.

San Francisco, CA – October 17, 2025 – OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research company, has officially launched its highly anticipated social media application, Sora. Designed to compete in the burgeoning short-form video market currently dominated by platforms like TikTok, Sora distinguishes itself by exclusively featuring content generated entirely by artificial intelligence. The app, currently available on an invite-only basis for iOS users in the U.S. and Canada, empowers users to transform simple text prompts into playful and creative short videos.

Sora leverages OpenAI’s advanced Sora 2 video generation model, allowing individuals to craft unique video clips up to 10 seconds in length. Unlike traditional social media platforms, users cannot upload pre-existing photos or videos from their camera rolls; all visual content within Sora is born from AI. The user experience mirrors popular short-video apps, featuring a vertical, swipe-to-scroll feed and a personalized ‘For You’ page driven by sophisticated recommendation algorithms. Standard social interactions such as liking, commenting, and remixing videos are also integrated.

One of Sora’s most innovative and potentially controversial features is its ‘cameos’ system. This allows users to verify their likeness through facial recognition, enabling them to appear in AI-generated videos created by themselves or, with explicit permission, by friends. Users are notified whenever their likeness is utilized, even in unpublished drafts, aiming to provide a layer of control and transparency amidst concerns about deepfakes and identity manipulation. OpenAI states that robust parental controls and content filters are built into the platform to mitigate potential misuse and ensure a safer environment.

At launch, Sora is free to use, with options for purchasing additional video generation capacity during periods of high demand. Internally, the app has received ‘overwhelmingly positive feedback’ from OpenAI employees during its testing phase, with some managers reportedly joking about its potential to become a ‘productivity drain’ due to frequent usage. OpenAI’s entry into the consumer social media space with Sora marks a significant strategic move, positioning the company as a direct challenger to established players and betting on AI-generated content to fuel the next wave of digital interaction. The launch intensifies competition in the AI-generated video sector, following similar moves by Meta with its ‘Vibes’ feature and Google’s integration of its Veo 3 model into YouTube.
