Nigerian Artificial Intelligence innovator, Aboze Brain John, has issued a compelling call to the country’s youth, urging them to look beyond immediate environmental challenges and harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle pressing local and global issues. Speaking after receiving the prestigious AIESEC Leadership Award, Aboze underscored the potential for young Nigerians to drive significant change from their home country, stating, ‘It’s possible to do big things for a small place.’
His message emphasizes the transformative power of AI, encouraging youths to leverage it for enhanced personal effectiveness and broader societal impact. Aboze himself serves as a testament to this philosophy, with a track record of impactful AI innovations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aboze made notable contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare system. He co-authored a research paper titled ‘SARS-CoV2: Application of Mathematical Modelling in Managing the Pandemic in Nigeria,’ which utilized the CHIME (COVID-19 Hospital Impact Model for Epidemics) model to forecast virus spread and aid hospital capacity planning. Furthermore, he authored a paper on ‘Optimising Health Facilities Allocation for COVID-19 Management Using Social Vulnerability Index and Spatial Data Analysis,’ a work designed to help hospitals identify vulnerable areas and prepare accordingly.
Beyond research, Aboze developed a drone technology capable of detecting face masks, a solution he proposed for airports, which led to discussions with Google AI expert, Laurence Moroney. His growing influence in the tech sector is also evident through his role as a knowledge volunteer with Data Science Nigeria, where he collaborated with international AI leaders such as Sara Hooker and Dr. Stephen Odaibo.
