The ‘Agent Factory’ is deeply integrated within Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft’s unified development platform for agentic AI. This platform empowers developers to build, deploy, and manage enterprise-grade AI agents, offering robust features such as support for multi-agent workflows, enabling agents to hand off tasks and collaborate on complex business processes. The initiative underscores Microsoft’s commitment to fostering an ‘agentic AI era,’ where intelligent agents can operate independently yet work together seamlessly as a cohesive team.
Central to this vision are the open standards. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), originally developed by Anthropic, is being championed by Microsoft as a universal language for data exchange between AI components. Microsoft has not only adopted MCP across its key products, including GitHub, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, Semantic Kernel, and Windows 11, but has also joined the MCP Steering Committee, contributing to its standardization. This protocol is envisioned to be as foundational for AI interoperability as USB-C is for hardware connectivity.
Complementing MCP is the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol, which is crucial for enabling direct communication and collaboration between different AI agents. Microsoft announced its support for A2A in both Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio, building upon its earlier commitment to MCP. The company has also joined the A2A working group on GitHub, actively participating in shaping the protocol’s specifications and tooling. This move is expected to overcome significant interoperability roadblocks, allowing for the creation of complex, multi-agent workflows that can integrate internal copilots, partner tools, and production infrastructure while maintaining stringent governance and service level agreements (SLAs).
Charles Lamanna, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Business and Industry Copilot, highlighted the transformative potential of these protocols, stating, “We are entering a new era in business where agents will not only act independently but also work together seamlessly as a team. To bring this vision to life, open protocols like Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A) are essential for agent interoperability.” He further expressed excitement about Copilot Studio and Azure AI Foundry supporting A2A, building on MCP, and joining the A2A working group, anticipating a significant transformation in how work is done.
Further enhancing the enterprise AI ecosystem, Microsoft has introduced Entra Agent ID, providing security teams with a unified directory view of all agents and agent applications. This aims to standardize governance for AI agents across the company. Azure AI Foundry also boasts an extensive enterprise toolchain, offering ready-to-use tools for common needs like searching across SharePoint and data lakes, executing Python for data analysis, and performing multi-step web research with Bing. It also supports custom tools through OpenAPI and MCP, ensuring flexibility for proprietary systems.
