Meta Reorganizes AI Division into Four Teams Amidst Hiring Freeze and Potential Job Reductions

TLDR: Meta is restructuring its ambitious AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, into four distinct teams to enhance focus and accelerate product development. This reorganization, led by newly appointed Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, comes despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent aggressive hiring spree and significant investments in AI. Reports indicate a potential for job cuts and a recent hiring freeze, signaling a shift in the company’s AI strategy.

Meta Platforms is undergoing a significant reorganization of its artificial intelligence operations, dividing its ambitious Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) into four specialized units. This strategic shift, announced internally by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s newly appointed chief AI officer and former CEO of Scale AI, aims to bring sharper focus and structure to the company’s high-stakes pursuit of advanced AI. The internal memo, shared around mid-August 2025, emphasized the need for clearer objectives to realize Meta’s long-term vision for ‘superintelligence‘.

Under the new structure, Meta Superintelligence Labs will now operate through four distinct groups: Large Language Models (LLMs), which will oversee systems like Llama that power Meta’s AI assistant and other generative tools; FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), a long-standing research lab dedicated to advancing theoretical and long-term AI research; AI for Products, a team led by former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, focused on embedding AI models into Meta’s extensive suite of consumer products; and Infrastructure and Compute, headed by Aparna Ramani, responsible for managing the foundational elements of Meta’s AI efforts, including data centers and high-performance computing hardware.

This restructuring marks a notable pivot, especially considering CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent commitment to spending ‘hundreds of billions‘ of dollars on AI talent and infrastructure. Over the past year, Meta aggressively recruited top researchers and engineers from rivals such as OpenAI and Google, offering what some reports described as ‘unprecedented pay packages‘ worth hundreds of millions of dollars, with one researcher reportedly offered $1.5 billion in total compensation. Zuckerberg himself was reportedly directly involved in this high-stakes recruitment campaign, personally reaching out to targets via email and WhatsApp.

However, this period of aggressive expansion appears to be giving way to a more cautious approach. Reports from sources like The New York Times and Bloomberg indicate that the reshuffle could pave the way for potential job cuts, downsizing, or reassignment of roles within the AI unit, which has grown to several thousand employees. Some executives are also anticipated to depart as part of the reorganization. Furthermore, Meta abruptly froze all hiring in its artificial intelligence division in mid-August 2025. A Meta spokesperson characterized this freeze as ‘basic organizational planning‘ following the company’s hiring spree and annual budgeting exercises, though the duration remains undetermined.

While the official stance is that splitting the AI unit will create clarity and accelerate AI product development, the future remains uncertain. The move reflects both the urgency and the turbulence of Meta’s AI ambitions, as the company navigates investor pressure over soaring costs and the intense competition in the AI landscape. This strategic shift could have broader implications for the ongoing battle for AI talent in Silicon Valley, as Meta’s path toward ‘superintelligence‘ continues to evolve.
