TLDR: YouTube’s recently implemented AI dubbing feature has sparked significant controversy among content creators due to its default activation setting. Many creators are reporting negative impacts on their channel growth and discoverability, leading to a strong recommendation to manually disable the feature.
A new artificial intelligence-powered auto-dubbing feature on YouTube has ignited a wave of criticism from content creators, who claim the platform has defaulted the setting to ‘on’ without sufficient user awareness, potentially harming channel performance. The feature, intended to broaden content reach to international audiences through AI-generated voiceovers, is instead being described by some as a ‘sneaky little devilish little hidden setting that YouTube was sabotaging your YouTube channel on purpose.’
According to reports from September 17, 2025, many YouTubers discovered that auto-dubbing was automatically enabled in their upload defaults. This default activation is believed to be detrimental, particularly for newer channels or those not specifically targeting a global, multi-lingual audience. One content creator, ‘ThePandaPhotographer,’ shared their findings after reviewing analytics, stating, ‘the autodubbment is killing the channel.’
The core of the backlash stems from the feature’s perceived negative impact on a channel’s discoverability and categorization. When auto-dubbing is active, YouTube’s algorithm reportedly places videos into broader, less relevant categories alongside other automatically dubbed content, making it harder for users to find specific videos. ‘You’re lost in this search of videos and this is why your YouTube channel cannot find cannot be found by the users looking for your videos,’ one creator explained. This issue is not limited to North America but also applies to EU standards and Japan.

Creators are strongly advising others to disable the auto-dubbing feature immediately. The recommended steps involve navigating to ‘Upload defaults’ in YouTube Studio settings and unchecking the auto-dubbing option. While the feature might benefit large channels with established international audiences that cater to translation, it is suggested that manual translation services are a more accurate and preferred alternative to AI auto-dubbing, which can be ‘very very incorrect especially with AI.’ Some creators who have tested disabling the feature claim to have observed an increase in their channel’s performance, suggesting a direct correlation between the default setting and suppressed growth.
